Plushenko's coach decries lack of blind justice in draw

Russia's Evgeni Plushenko has been the dominant men's skater in the world this year, but he was an also-ran in the rankings that helped determine the draw for Tuesday's Olympic short program.

Those rankings are based on results from the last three seasons, including this one. Plushenko had taken three seasons off after winning the 2006 Olympics. He returned to win two international events: the Grand Prix event in Russia and the European title.

The top 10 skaters in the world rankings drew for the last 10 spots in the skating order, and that pattern continued down the line.

So, Plushenko, ranked 38th, will start 10th among the 30 skaters.

Johnny Weir skates 25th, Evan Lysacek 28th and Jeremy Abbott 29th.

"I am upset this is not a blind draw, like it was in Turin four years ago," Alexei Mishin, Plushenko's coach, said Sunday. "The instinct for the judges is the late groups are better skaters.''

That sort of judging was supposed to end under the new scoring system, when the mathematical possibilities for scores are virtually infinite.

Under the old 6.0 system, judges were not allowed to give the same scores in both marked areas (technical and presentation) to two skaters.

That led to judges "holding back'' scores for the later skaters, so the top marks were not gone.

Plushenko was the second man of 30 to skate at Turin.
He won the short program.

Plushenko's coach joins in the politics

This is not news, but the politicking around figure skating can border on the lethal, and it’s in full, entertaining, swing at these Olympic Games...

Plushenko’s colourful - and that adjective falls far far short - coach Alexei Mishin jumped into the fray with both feet Sunday afternoon after the formal draw which determines in which order the men will skate Tuesday’s short program.

Since 2005, the International Skating Union has used the relatively new world points standings to determine the drawing order. The top six (or five, as it is here) ranked skaters would skate in the final group of the night, but would draw for starting position WITHIN that group. The next six would be in the second last group, and would draw for starting positions within that group and so forth.

But this is the first time such a system has been used at the Olympics. Because he has been back in competition only this season and points are based on three seasons, Plushenko is ranked only 38th in the world. That means he drew to skate in the second group of the evening, with far less skilled skaters. He starts 10th out of 30 on Tuesday.

Under the new scoring system it’s not supposed to matter when a skater starts because judges no longer compare that skater to his competition. It’s about points accumulated for each element and movement.

Mishin doesn’t buy that or, if he does, he still wants to create an image of a disadvantaged Plushenko, hoping to tip the scales on component scores (the only place for a little subjective wiggle room for the judges).

“I prefer the system in Torino where anybody could draw any number,” he said. “If you have got the right to be a participant, everybody should be equal.

“Judging creates an instinct: Later Group: Better Skater.”

His argument is severely undermined by historical fact, however. After the “open” draw of 2006, Plushenko started second in the short program, and won the Olympic championship.

Mishin has had an enormously successful career: he coached 1994 Olympic gold medalist Alexei Urmanov, who edged Elvis Stojko, and was the first coach of Alexei Yagudin laying out the basic technical prowess which would help him win the 2002 title under “finishing” coach Tatiana Tarasova.

And Plushenko, whom he’s coached all his career, is a three-time world champion, 2006 gold medalist, and is one of the all-time greats.

Mishin says that because Plushenko came along after his own coaching techniques had become more refined, the skater was like “an apple maturing on a tree,” during his three-year absence from competition.

He said that a skater - “and I don’t want to mention names”-who hadn’t been provided early in his career with the same strong technique Plushenko had learned could not return after a similar absence.

“My system has matured,” he said, with no attempt at humility. “Many coaches in the world use my exercises and system for coaching but they’re shy to tell about that. That’s true.”

Actually, it is.

Mishin said Plushenko is, “skating better than Torino. Steps better: 100 per cent. Spins better: 200 per cent. And jumps the same, not worse. And before Evgeny had sometimes not completely measured movements, now each movement is measured and matured. Sometimes before he’d do some movements which weren’t very mature.”

That, in case you didn’t recognize it, was another bald sell to any judges who might still be looking for flaws and holes in his artistry.... :-)

Не будем нагнетать раньше времени... Вот пусть они там в конце все и соревнуются. Неизвестно, спорно все это как лучше, в короткой быть раньше всех или после всех. Главное, чтобы он свою собственную задачу выполнил :plush47:

МОСКВА, 15 фев - РИА Новости. Олимпийский чемпион 2006 года, российский фигурист Евгений Плющенко выступит в соревнованиях в короткой программе под 10-м номером, сообщает официальный сайт ОИ-2010.

Всего на лед выйдут 30 участников. В случае победы в Ванкувере Плющенко станет первым олимпийским чемпионом за 58 лет, которому удалось отстоять свой титул на следующих Играх.

Еще один представитель России - 20-летний Артем Бородулин - получил при жеребьевке 13-й номер.

Серебряный призер ОИ-2006 в Турине Стефан Ламбьель выступит под 19-м номером, сразу после него свою короткую программу покажут японец Нобунари Ода и француз Брайан Жубер.

Канадцу Патрику Чану при жеребьевке достался 24-й номер. Чемпион мира 2009 года американец Эван Лайсачек выступит 28-м.

Фигуристы представят короткую программу 16 февраля.

Мишин доволен предстартовой формой Плющенко, но не рад критике

Наставник Евгения Плющенко Алексей Мишин доволен той формой, на которую перед главным стартом четырехлетия вышел его подопечный. Российский фигурист от общения с прессой категорически отказался до выступления в короткой программе в ближайший вторник.

"Он именно в той форме, которая должна быть за три дня до начала соревнований", - подчеркнул Мишин, отвечая на вопросы журналистов после того, как Плющенко попробовал лед Pacific Coliseum в субботу. Российский специалист добавил, что он очень доволен тем, что субботний тренировочный прокат олимпийского чемпиона Турина-2006 был "безукоризненным"....

Подчеркнув, что ему не нравится порожденная шумихой вокруг письма Инмана критика его ученика, Мишин отметил, что "фигуристы должны соревноваться на льду, а не в интернете". После чего он добавил, что уже во время субботней тренировки он и его подопечный хотели продемонстрировать специалистам, что та дорожка шагов Плющенко, которую оценили вторым уровнем сложности на недавнем чемпионате Европы, на самом деле является элементом третьего уровня.

При этом Мишин дал понять, что на первенстве континента в Таллине, где Плющенко завоевал золото, он еще не был на пике своей формы. Он пояснил, что перед чемпионатом Европы "мы не хотели его перегрузить" и относились к нему "бережно, как к букету цветов, который должен быть свеж ко дню соревнований".

Мишину также пришлось отвечать на ряд вопросов, в которых выражалась превалирующая в Северной Америке точка зрения, что европейцы вроде Плющенко и Жубера берут свое сложными прыжками в четыре оборота, однако уступают североамериканцам в артистизме.

На это Мишин заметил, что "современное фигурное катание без четверных будет отброшено во времена (канадца Элвиса) Стойко и (россиянина Алексея) Урманова", иными словами - в 90-е.

Тренер также не согласился с низкой оценкой артистизма своего подопечного, заявив, что "немногие фигуристы показывают программы артистизма такого же уровня, как Женя".
