06 April 2011 - Press releases

Six new events added to the Olympic Winter Games programme in Sochi

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today confirmed the inclusion of six new events on the programme of the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi in 2014. They are ski half-pipe (men and women), women’s ski jumping, biathlon mixed relay, figure skating team event and luge team relay.

The decision to include the new events was based on a report presented by the Olympic Programme Commission (OPC) to the IOC Executive Board (EB) in Acapulco in October last year. The OPC studied the proposal of the individual International Sports Federations and, at the request of the EB, compiled a detailed analysis of all candidate events at their respective world championships this winter. In addition, the OPC looked at an operational feasibility study conducted by the organisers of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games.

The key positive factors included whether the changes would increase universality, gender equity and youth appeal, and, in general, add value to the Games. Other considerations included the cost of infrastructure, and the impact on the overall quota and the number of events.

“The inclusion of these events on the Olympic Winter Games programme is sure to be appreciated by athletes and sports fans alike,” said IOC President Jacques Rogge. “These are exciting, entertaining events that perfectly complement the existing events on the sports programme, bring added appeal and increase the number of women participating at the Games. I look forward to watching the athletes compete in these events in Sochi 2014.”

Five other events - ski slopestyle (men and women), snowboard slopestyle (men and women), and Alpine team parallel competition - are subject to a further feasibility study. A decision on the inclusion of these five events will be made within the coming weeks.

New events for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi

The sports programme of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games was expanded by six
events on 6 April 2011 when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed the
inclusion of ski halfpipe (men and women), women’s ski jumping, biathlon mixed relay,
figure skating team event and luge team relay.

The decision was the result of a number of positive factors, including an increase in
universality, gender equity and youth appeal. The IOC believes these events will bring
added value to the Games for athletes and spectators alike. To get a taste of what’s to
come in 2014, we’ve prepared a short description of the new events:
.....

Figure Skating Team Event: (International Skating Union - ISU)
The figure skating team event will feature teams made up of six skaters: one male skater,
one female skater, one skating pair and one ice dance couple. Points are awarded to each
skater/ couple. The team with the highest number of aggregate points is declared the
winner. The figure skating team event will make its first appearance in January 2012 at the
first Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck.

Olympic ice arena will mirror the trajectory of a figure skater’s triple toe loop

Image

Admit it, standing behind the falling curtain of the Olympic Games in Vancouver on the large hockey arena of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Park, on its ground floor – was symbolic.

The spectacular views, the sounds of construction, and the stories told by engineers, who are acting as guides – all of this paints a picture that simply takes the breath away!

So, let us begin our futuristic excursion. Although, I am not sure as to what prevails in our journey – fantasy or reality; because the construction of the facilities is happening very rapidly.

Let us get familiar with our surroundings. We are standing at the Imeretinsky Lowland, near Adler. It is a so-called coastal cluster where the Olympic Park will be located, which will unite a significant part of the sports facilities.

This has never before happened in the history of the Winter Olympics – all ice stadiums will be in walking distance of one another.

Without more ado, I will explain that the remaining facilities will be located in the second cluster, in the mountains, and will be 48 kilometers away, in Krasnaya Polyana. Planners have already calculated that it will take 12 minutes to get there by train from the Adler airport, and 24 minutes by car. That is true, although, only if one is traveling at the maximum speed. But, either way, one should expect to travel for no more than 35 minutes. And the new airport is practically fully operational.

Six facilities will be erected in the Imeretinsky Lowland. Staff members of the state-owned corporation, Olympstroy, told about these buildings, especially about one of the biggest of them – a large ice skating arena. It will have two hockey arenas: one main and one training arena. They differ by the fact that the practice field will not have any stands. Meanwhile, the concrete casting of stands in the main arena has already begun. Preparations have been underway since May 2009, and construction began in August. And, some big results have already been achieved.

The architectural concept in the Imeretinskaya Valley assumes the introduction of a so-called “river-sea” scheme. Roads will be paved at the railway and for automobile passenger unloading zones. These will not be straight tracks, but intertwined lines resembling footpaths, but will be rather comfortable. They will symbolize mountain streams and rivers that later merge into the sea, located in the middle of the Olympic Park. Meanwhile, a ferris wheel, made of transparent material, will be installed in this artificial reservoir. Glass capsules/cabins with people will rise from the water to a height of 250 meters – and lower back into the water.

On the left of the grand hockey arena will be the stadium for curling, not far from which – an indoor skating center. The next facility is the sports palace for figure skating and short-track competitions. The foundation is ready. This will be an interesting building. The smooth curving lines of the palace’s facade mirror the trajectory of a figure skater’s triple toe loop.

The opening and closing ceremonies of the 2014 Sochi Olympics will be held at the central stadium, with a capacity of 40,000 spectators. And finally, the sixth facility – a small ice hockey arena. After the Olympics, some of the construction will be disassembled and transferred to other regions of Russia.

Laborers are working on the Olympic Park facilities around the clock, in three shifts. Attention was drawn to some unique antennas with balls – they are a source of diffused lighting, allowing the laborers to work throughout the night. It is noteworthy that fixtures, during the construction of the basement and the ground floor of the large ice arena, were boiled and, so as not to violate the structure of the metal, connected manually. The facility is designed to withstand a very high seismic threshold. Specialists explained that while in the regions, buildings are constructed taking into account a 7. 5 - 8 earthquake point shock, in the Olympic Park, it is 8 -8.5 points. It can withstand any earthquake – even the “2012 Apocalypse”, about which there is some idle talk.

Often times, people doubt if it is such a good idea that all construction work for the Sochi Olympics is practically being done from scratch. “In depends on the concrete country,” say designers and builders who provide a somewhat evasive response. If in Europe, it is considered an advantage when 20% of the work remains to be done, and Russia, in this sense, stands as an innovator. This is all, of course, insanely expensive. But, as they say, Sochi will be unlike anyone else.

U.S. TV rights for the 2014 Olympic Games... NBC :plush34:
------------------------------------------------------------------------

June 6-7 Set for Olympic TV Bidding

The IOC has invited U.S. networks to Switzerland on June 6-7 to bid on the next set of multi-billion dollar Olympic television rights, Olympic officials told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Network executives will travel to International Olympic Committee headquarters in Lausanne to make presentations and submit sealed offers for rights to the 2014 and 2016 Games, with the option of seeking a four-games package through 2020....

-------------------------------

IOC owes NBC a break in TV rights bidding for billions of reasons
.....

Carrion told the Associated Press last month he expected the rights for 2014 and 2016 to bring in more than NBC paid for 2010 and 2012 and that the IOC has offered the option to present bids that also included 2018 and 2020.
......

"NBC is the only network that has had the Olympics in its DNA," Pound said. "I had great faith in Dick Ebersol. For me, that would go into the mix (of deciding who gets the rights.) Whether that gives you a $100 million edge or not, that's a different issue."

Any U.S. network bidding for the next four Olympics can be assured of just one in a time zone friendly to the United States: the 2016 Summer Games in Rio.

Plus, they all get the booby prize: the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, which everyone expects to be very costly to broadcasters from the standpoint of transportation, logistics and security, given the Wild West mentality that reigns in Russia and Sochi's proximity to the persistent flashpoints in the Caucasus....

Sochi leader: host city on track for 2014 Games

Sochi, Russia is still more than two years away from hosting the country's first Winter Olympics. But the resort city on the Black Sea has already undergone a major transformation.

Nearly every venue for the 2014 Olympics is being built from scratch. More than 42,000 hotel rooms are being added along with dozens of infrastructure projects that will provide rail lines and better roads. Construction of venues and infrastructure is on time and on budget, Dmitry Chernyshenko, president and CEO of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, told USA TODAY in a phone interview Tuesday.

"In some areas, we're even ahead of our plans," Chernyshenko said. "We are running one of the most complicated and big construction projects in the world. It's nearly 50,000 people who are working 24/7. All of the venues should be ready…We've got a very ambitious commitment to finish all the competition and related infrastructure at least two seasons prior to the Games."

Chernyshenko emphasized that the total budget of hosting the Games has remained at $7 billion despite Russian media reports that have said the costs have ballooned. The operating budget for the Games is about $2 billion, he said. The Sochi organizing committee has already raised more than $1 billion in sponsorship revenue.

Saturday marked 1,000 days until the opening ceremony on Feb. 7, 2014. Organizers celebrated the milestone by opening 26 volunteer centers across Russia.

Russians have embraced the Games, Chernyshenko said, as evidenced by the more than 1.5 million votes that were counted in a February election to choose the official Sochi mascots. The snow leopard won 28% of the vote followed by a polar bear and a hare.

Russian critics have questioned the results and noted that the snow leopard was the choice of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

But Chernyshenko called the snow leopard "a great symbol of renovation and careful consideration to the environment." He noted that the animal was endangered in the Sochi region and Games organizers have made an effort to protect the leopard's habitat. "This is one of the most important legacies that we enjoy now," he said.

http://www.sports.ru/others/figure-skat ... 84750.html
