Figure skater Evgeni Plushenko plans to perform in 2014 Olympics

Evgeni Plushenko, the 2006 Olympic figure skating champion and twice Olympic silver medalist, told reporters he intended to participate in his fourth Olympics both in the team and individual events.

Although he lost Russia’s championship to Maksim Kovtun, he plans to do his best in the Sochi Olympics. He is not discouraged by the fact that such a prestigious expert as Tatiana Tarasova lobbies Kovtun’s interests.

“It is for President of the Figure Skating Federation of Russia Aleksandr Gorshkov and Federation General Director Valentin Piseyev to decide who will represent Russia in the Sochi Olympics,” Plushenko said.

He said he would refuse from the participation in the two events of the Sochi programme only if he did not feel one-hundred percent ready.

“If I have problems with health I will surely say so,” he noted. “I will appear in the Sochi Olympics only if I feel ready to do my best,” he said.

Articles on other languages with some factual errors - of course, this is result of using the wrong (short and incomplete) english translation from "Voice of Russia" :kli_ny: :ps_ih:

- in french article they wrote how Plushy said before that he will not, at all, compete in Sochi
- in italian - that Plushy's expressed his changed wish to compete, so he is, by them - already in Oly team... :-)

More... I cant check them all :kli_ny: - probably with similar "mistakes" :du_ma_et:
... but maybe they are right: why russian officials AT ALL should to think between them two? Plushy decided to compete - and this is it! :plush41: His "wishes are commandment" for RussSkatFed! :-)

Well, again, I don't have all the information, so I am just guessing...But right now, I suspect it's not a bad thing that this is getting reported, even with mistakes.

Though of course, it would be even better if someone actually tries to look at all the facts, and apply some logic. Do some actual journalism, in other words!

Yes - minimum knowledge of skating and own the translation from Russian - not just hearsay an agency news.... and this, incomplete :kli_ny: :ps_ih:

--------------------------------------------------

Here is one more mistake :sh_ок: ... same error was in the previous AFP article - someone just copied his own mistake (bolded part about "ISU regulations") :ps_ih:
... clarification for this who dont know rules: every skater who won the minimum technical scores at any ISU international competition in this season - in Plushy's case, it was the "Volvo Cup" in Riga - can compete at the Olympics!

Russia figure skater Plushenko changes mind, demands Sochi place

Image

Moscow (AFP) - Russian figure skating champion Evgeni Plushenko has done an about-turn over next month's Winter Olympics in Sochi, calling on Russian skate officials to choose him ahead of national champion Maxim Kovtun.

The 2006 Olympic gold medal winner was stunned at the Russian national championships last month when he lost out to the emerging 18-year-old Kovtun, blaming a sequence of nagging injuries for his poor form.

With just one place available to Russia in the men's programme at the Olympics, Plushenko said after the defeat that he would limit his participation at Sochi to the newly-installed team event, leaving his younger rival to fill the individual role.

For their part, Russia's figure skating federation chiefs said they would not make a final selection for their Sochi team until after the European championships, which will take place in Budapest from January 15-19.

Plushenko, however, appears to have changed his mind telling the ITAR-TASS news agency Friday that he had every right to be named as Russia's sole challenger in the individual event for what would be his fourth Olympic Games.

"I just want to remind those who question my right to compete at Sochi that last year Kovtun was fifth in the Russian nationals but nevertheless he performed both at the European and the world championships," Plushenko said.

"After he finished 17th at the world championships in London, Canada, Russia received only one place at the Olympics tournament.

"Kovtun performed well at last month's nationals but one needs to have solid experience of top international competitions to aspire to win Olympic medals."

International Skating Union (ISU) regulations state clearly that each country's winner of the Olympic qualification tournament-- in this case the Russian national championships -- should represent the country at the Games.

But Russian federation chiefs insist they have the option of making their own selections for Sochi.

The head of the Russian figure skating federation, Alexander Gorshkov, has previously said he was ready to take responsibility for making the choice.

"In the last year Maxim (Kovtun) has made a serious leap forward in the quality of his skating," Gorshkov said recently. "He's a true sportsman and I hope he will continue his growth despite the lack of experience.

"Meanwhile, Plushenko is a true icon of men's figure skating and an extremely courageous athlete. And when he says that he's ready to compete I believe we can trust his words without doubt.

"We still have time to finalise our choice. And I believe we (the federation) will have enough wisdom to make the right choice."

More short translation of parts above....

Plushenko wants to coach young Japanese figure-skater Yuzuru Hanyu after Sochi Olympics

ST. PETERSBURG, January 10. /ITAR-TASS/. The 2006 men’s Olympic figure-skating champion Yevgeny Plushenko spoke about his post-Sochi plans in a recent interview with Itar-Tass.

"I like Japanese figure-skater Yuzuru Hanyu. He reminds me of myself when I was 18. He spins like a top just as I did. I would not mind becoming his coach after Sochi,” Plushenko told Itar-Tass.

Plushenko’s post-Olympic plans also include a show of Olympic champions in which prominent figure-skaters like Stephan Lambiel, Brian Joubert and Johnny Weir will take part. “It’s going to be more than skating to music intermixed with short runs to which spectators of ice shows have got accustomed in recent years. The emphasis will be made on sport elements and components,” Plushenko went on to say.

“We are going to perform in 40 Russian and some European cities. The show of Olympic champions will kick off shortly after the Olympic Games in Sochi where I am planning to compete both in the individual and team events,” the Russian figure-skater said.

Plushenko has taken part in three Olympic Games. The one is Sochi will be the fourth and the last in his sport career. However, he did not exclude his new return theoretically. “Technical progress advances constantly. What if nano-falciform cartilages are invented and I will be able to get new abdominal rings? If that happens, I will continue competing further,” Plushenko said, jokingly or seriously.

Yevgeny Plushenko changes mind, wants to compete in singles
Nick Zaccardi

Yevgeny Plushenko thought better of his plans for the Sochi Olympics, saying he wants to compete in both the team and individual events in a Russian interview.

Plushenko, the three-time Olympic medalist, previously said after finishing second at the Russian Championships in December that he wanted to be part of the new Olympic figure skating team event and let Russian national champion Maksim Kovtun compete in the individual event.

Though Plushenko finished behind Kovtun at nationals, he is thought to be the preferred choice for Russia’s single men’s spot at the Olympics.

The problem with Plushenko’s original plan was that a country can’t sub out a skater after the team event with a new one for the individual event if it only has one qualified spot, like Russia does for men.

Plushenko could compete in the team event, become injured, and pull out of the individual event and potentially allow Kovtun to take his place.

But that does not appear to be his intention. Plushenko told ITAR-TASS he intends to honor the rules and compete in both events in Sochi. That is, if he is picked over Kovtun by Russia’s figure skating federation.

He stated his case to ITAR-TASS in comments translated by Agence France-Presse.

“I just want to remind those who question my right to compete at Sochi that last year Kovtun was fifth in the Russian Nationals, but nevertheless he performed both at the European and the World Championships,” Plushenko said. ”After he finished 17th at the World Championships in London, Canada, Russia received only one place at the Olympics tournament.

“Kovtun performed well at last month’s nationals, but one needs to have solid experience of top international competitions to aspire to win Olympic medals.”

Russia is expected to choose between Plushenko and Kovtun after Kovtun competes at the European Championships next week.

I appreciate the underlined part very much. But I don't understand why Nick Zaccardi keep on thinking that it was his plan...I would have thought that things are pretty obvious. Wonder if we can try to make him figure it out just a little bit more? :kli_ny:

As for it being on NBC, yes, ironic, isn't it? Of course, you know that Johnny is going to be a commentator on NBC, too, now...

In many ways... :ps_ih: (maybe because Americans dont have this time skater who can be rival to Plushy) :hi_hi_hi:

No, Nick just noted the fact that Plushy planned to compete at Team event - not knowing the rules ... what means - the public plan, a public declaration :mi_ga_et:
