China’s Nan Song fell on his two opening quad toes but recovered to land four clean triples to win the preliminary round at the World Figure Skating Championships. The men were the last to skate for the prelims, after Britain’s Jenna McCorkell took the ladies’ preliminary round earlier in the day.

Song scored a 130.75 to take first over Russia’s Sergei Voronov, who opted to not attempt a quad but hit six triples in his free skate. Poland’s Maciej Cieplucha was third, followed by Uzbekistan’s Misha Ge.

The top 12 skaters will join the 18 men who were directly entered into the short program, which takes place on Thursday.

What is "Lynx"? Google said Mishin replaced "Palatine uvula" from old skates... I don't totally understand what did Mishin say. And I don't know whether a ballet dancer changes shoes before an event. They change in general? Or they never change? :plush38:

I see now! So his skates went well?

A report from arena. I dont know if this is just oversight of reporterz.
It seeme that Gachinski doesn't attend practice also today. He doesn't need to show his form at practice or he skated at another rink..? Hmm. Strange :du_ma_et:

I googled "lynx". It calls "tongue", in English.

First, Google translation suggested "tongue". But I didn't know what is "tongue" of skates. :kli_ny: And changed second suggestion.. Google was right :P

Live play-by-play coverage: World Championships pairs' short program
http://www.examiner.com/figure-skating- ... z1qQdcBR2t

Qing Pang/Jian Tong CHN - side-by-side triple toe (Tong steps out), triple twist, throw triple loop (a bit careful on the landing, never actually stretched the free leg out, but should be fine) - TES 33.94, PCS 33.16, SP SCORE 67.10

Aliona Savchenko/Robin Szolkowy GER - throw triple axel (two-foot), triple twist (nice), side-by-side triple toe (Szolkowy turns out) - TES 35.74, PCS 32.89, SP SCORE 68.63

Wenjing Sui/Cong Han CHN - triple Tano twist, side-by-side triple toe (Sui fall), throw triple flip TES 34.90, PCS 29.37, FALL -1.00, SP SCORE 63.27

Meagan Duhamel/Eric Radford CAN - triple twist (nice), side-by-side triple lutz (Radford fall, wow, they went for broke there), throw triple flip- TES , PCS , FALL -1.00, SP SCORE 63.69

Ice cut! What a strange fourth group that was. I don't know if I've ever seen anything like it from three of the top teams in the world. Kavaguti/Smirnov fall on the exit of their lift, Bazarova/Larionov fall on their end pose (and then inexplicably gets the highest TES even though they had problems in their short), then Volosozhar/Trankov fall on their death spiral. Wow.

Tatiana Volosozhar/Maxim Trankov RUS - triple twist (a little wonky on the set down), side-by-side triple toe (nice), throw triple flip (a bit of a lean, two-foot), fall on the death spiral - what's going on with the Russian pairs?? - TES 31.62, PCS 30.86, FALLS -2.00, SP SCORE 60.48

Stefania Berton/Ondrej Hotarek ITA - side-by-side triple toe (nice), triple twist (low and collision), throw triple loop (hangs on) - TES 32.39, PCS 28.00, SP SCORE 60.39

Vera Bazarova/Yuri Larionov RUS - side-by-side triple toe (Bazarova doubles?, Larionov steps out), triple twist (nice), throw triple flip (a bit slow going in but ok), wow and a fall on the ending pose (not a promising start for Russia) - TES 35.33, PCS 29.69, SP SCORE 65.02

Yuko Kavaguti/Alexander Smirnov RUS - side-by-side triple toe (a bit scratchy from Smirnov), triple twist (a bit of a collision on the catch), throw triple loop, really strong position on the lift but a very distracting fall on the landing/exit of the lift, then a really rough death spiral - TES 31.20, PCS 30.39, FALLS -2.00, SP SCORE 59.59

Maylin Hausch/Daniel Wende GER - double twist, throw triple salchow (splattering fall), side-by-side triple toe - TES 25.44, PCS 24.04, FALL -1.00, SP SCORE 48.48

Narumi Takahashi/Mervin Tran JPN - side-by-side triple salchow (NICE!), triple twist, throw triple salchow (foot down) - beautiful short program, great to see Takahashi actually get her head together on the jumps - TES 34.94, PCS 30.43, SP SCORE 65.37

Caydee Denney/John Coughlin USA - triple twist (biggest one yet), side-by-side triple toe (nice), throw triple flip (nice) - that was their best, strongest skate of the season, well done - TES 34.36, PCS 28.12, SP SCORE 62.48

Anais Morand/Timothy Leemann SUI - throw triple lutz (step out), side-by-side double axel, double Tano twist - TES 24.28, PCS 20.31, SP SCORE 44.59

Jessica Dube/Sebastien Wolfe CAN - triple twist (saved it, but a pretty noticeable collision), side-by-side triple salchow (nice), throw triple lutz (two-foot), the two errors are going to be a bit costly, but that should put them into second - TES 30.37, PCS 25.46, SP SCORE 55.83

Vanessa James/Morgan Cipres FRA - double twist (just a bit too loose in the air), side-by-side triple toe (out of unison, but landed), throw triple salchow - TES 27.36, PCS 23.15, SP SCORE 50.51

Danielle Montalbano/Evgeni Krasnopolski ISR - double twist, side-by-side triple salchow (Montalbano two-foots?), throw triple loop (nice), a bit messy on the step sequence - TES 25.90, PCS 18.90, SP SCORE 44.69

Nicole Della Monica/Matteo Guarise ITA - double twist, side-by-side triple salchow (Della Monica hangs on), throw triple salchow (two-foot) - TES 27.88, PCS 21.19, SP SCORE 49.07

Mary Beth Marley/Rockne Brubaker USA - side-by-side triple toe (Marley hangs on), triple twist (set down was a bit too quick), throw triple lutz (hangs on but one foot!) - TES 33.08, PCS 26.54, SP SCORE 59.62

Ji Hyang Ri/Won Hyok Thae PRK - triple twist (low, but fast rotation), side-by-side triple toe (Thae bails out early and downgrade), throw triple flip (big, two-foot), botched their pairs spin, the program kind of comes apart choreographically really fast after their tricks - TES 19.03, PCS 18.20, DEDUCTION -1.00 SP SCORE 36.23

Stacey Kemp/David King GBR - triple twist (a bit messy, barely caught before the landing), side-by-side double axel (Kemp fall), throw triple loop (fall), nice entrance into the star lift (though lost a good bit of speed and a tad slow and shaky during) - TES 23.24, PCS 18.09, FALLS -2.00, SP SCORE 39.33

Mari Vartmann/Aaron Van Cleave GER - side-by-side triple toe (Vartmann double), double twist, throw triple salchow - can't say the music really helps their cause too much - TES 25.66, PCS 22.25, SP SCORE 47.91

Savchenko and Szolkowy lead bizarre pairs short program in Nice
http://www.examiner.com/figure-skating- ... ogram-nice

The pairs kicked off the main competition today at the World Figure Skating Championships, and Germany’s Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy began defense of their title with a win in the short program. It was a strange day of skating, however, as none of the top six teams skated cleanly and all of the Russian pairs took fluke falls during their programs. Defending silver medalists Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov are in a shocking eighth place.

Skating second-to-last, Savchenko and Szolkowy took a huge risk and attempted the throw triple axel, an element that they have never landed before in competition. Though Savchenko two-footed the landing, it was the best that they have done it so far. A turn-out on Szolkowy’s solo triple toe kept them from scoring higher, but their 68.63 is still good enough for first amongst the uneven skates from the other teams.

In their first international competition since last year’s Worlds, two-time World champions Qing Pang and Jian Tong are solidly in second after a mistake on their underrotated side-by-side triple toe. But the rest of their short program was strong, with their trademark big tricks all done well, earning them a 67.10.

The surprise in third are Japan’s Narumi Takahashi and Mervin Tran, who overcame their inconsistency to skate their best short program of the season. A slight foot down on their throw triple salchow was their only error. And they scored a 65.37, a quarter-point ahead of Russia’s Vera Bazarova and Yuri Larionov.

Bazarova and Larionov had messy side-by-side triple toes but recovered with a strong triple twist and superb lift. But they took a fluke fall on their ending pose, though it did not cost them any points because it happened after the program ended.

Four points separate the next seven, which include both American pairs. U.S. champs Caydee Denney and John Coughlin were the highest-placing pair to skate a clean program, and they are in seventh with a 62.48. Low difficulty levels on their triple twist and their death spirals kept them from placing higher. Skating early, U.S. silver medalists Mary Beth Marley and Rockne Brubaker were also clean, currently tenth with a 59.62.

Volosozhar and Trankov looked flabbergasted as they saw their score after two errors in their short program. Volosozhar two-footed her throw triple flip early in the program, but the bigger mistake came near the end, when Trankov lost his pivot on the death spiral and both took a fall. They are five points behind the Japanese for third and just over eight points behind the Germans. The podium is still a possibility, but the gold is most likely out of reach now.

Former European champions Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov took a fall on the exit of their lift and are currently in 11th.
