2012 Grand Prix Final qualifiers: Russia leads the way with seven
The lineup for the 2012 Grand Prix Final is set after the completion of NHK Trophy today. The home crowd in Sochi, Russia, will have plenty of skaters to cheer on, as Russia took seven of the 24 entries in the competition. Right behind is Japan, who qualified six, all in the singles disciplines. Canada and the United States were the other countries who qualified multiple entries, with four and two, respectively.
The Japanese men, who have won ten of the possible 18 medals on the Grand Prix this season, including four gold, will have a big presence in the Grand Prix Final. Japan will be represented by four men in the Final, the first time that has happened since the 1998-99 Final, when Russia qualified four men (Alexei Yagudin, Alexei Urmanov, Evgeni Plushenko, and Alexander Abt).
For many of the skaters, the Grand Prix Final this season will be of special significance, since it will take place in the same venue that will host the figure skating events at the 2014 Winter Olympics in 15 months.
