clairdelalune wrote:EV: Were you shocked by his blade accident?
PC: Not really. Of course Dai was very unlucky and I'm sorry that happened, but the equipment is part of our sport. You should always keep in mind something unexpected might happen on the ice. With the skates, with the boots. If the skater is working the whole season for that moment he should take care of the equipment as well. I have a person responsible for the state of my skates but I check every little detail myself as well. If something looks suspicious I will not let the specialists get rid of me till I'm convinced. Otherwise - what all this work for?

Oda Injured; will be back next season

On the injury report is Nobunari Oda, who apparently has a partial tear in his left patella tendon according to The Mainichi Daily News.

Oda will need about six weeks of complete rest but is expected to recover in time for the 2011-12 season, according to his doctor.

Oda felt pain in his left knee during last month's world championships in Moscow, where he placed second after the short program but ended up in sixth.

Apparently, the diagnosis for now is to try to use the rest to avoid surgery. Hopefully, Oda will be back and have a full recovery. I am also hoping he has enrolled in a math course for his down time.

Chan practising in Richmond Hill
Gold medalist works with choreographer to perfect his skills

Men’s world figure skating champion Patrick Chan digs his blades into the frozen sheet of ice at Tom Graham Arena and between twists and turns he smiles, taking instructions from choreographer Lori Nichol.

Chan is making Richmond Hill his temporary training ground this week, working on his choreography.
Taking gold in Russia one month ago and setting a world record score in the process, the 20-year-old skater, who trains predominantly in Colorado, admits the facilities of the local rink and Richmond Training Centre staff are tough to match when he’s in the GTA.

“Bob [Emerson, training centre director] is amazing to work with. He’s a real pro and so is everyone else working here,” said Chan Monday afternoon, still in his skates, having just finished his first practice session.

Having been put through the paces by Nichol during a three-hour skate that started at 9 a.m., he took a quick break to speak with media and pose for photographs with Mayor Dave Barrow.

Before playfully swapping his gold medal for the mayor’s chain of office, Chan continued to rave about the local facility.
“The rink is heated — that is huge to skaters,” he said with a laugh. “The skating surface is nice and big and the sound system is top notch. This is one of my favourite places to train.”

Nichol said she has long worked with Emerson and staff, also raving about the environment, calling Tom Graham one of the cleanest and “best smelling” rinks around.
“What really makes this place special is the people, from the maintenance guys to the other skaters, from Bob to Carmen [James, the training centre’s administrative assistant]. They understand our needs, they are all part of our team,” Nichol added.

Apart from the gold-medal performance, the four-time Canadian champion is coming off two weekend shows in Brampton and will travel to China and South Korea for shows in June and July, before the next grand prix skating season begins in the fall.

Still delighting in his world title, Chan called that result a perfect end to the season, though he’s now taking steps to defend his title and hopefully continue what some media are calling the “Chan dynasty”.

“A gold and world record is great and I worked hard for it, but no, I’m not satisfied. I don’t really know when I will be satisfied. I guess that’s a good thing,” said Chan with a laugh.
“I want to dominate,” he explained, with a cool confidence, “I think that’s a good start to satisfaction”.

He’s aware that he’s adding his own chapter to the skating history of the town that developed Canadian champions Elvis Stojko and Emmanuel Sandhu.

“It’s cool to know they began here, but I don’t dwell on it much,” said Chan. “I see myself as taking their place and it’s my turn to do even better,” he added.

Image

I perfectly agree with you cekoni. Chan always smile, looks like to be kind with everyone... But I don't believe him.
In the last world championship in Torino (I was there) after men FP, everyone is going home, also judges. But Chan, before to go, went to judges to say hi to them, shake hands and talk a little with them. Of course the way he use to do is not the real reason because he's the judges'favourite skater (that's my opinion) but....it helps, isn't it? Above all it helps when he wasn't able to do quads...
