IOC announces new events for Sochi 2014

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed today the inclusion of ski slopestyle (men and women), snowboard slopestyle (men and women) and snowboard parallel special slalom (men and women) on the sports programme of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

The decision was taken by the IOC Executive Board (EB) ahead of the 123rd IOC Session in Durban, South Africa, and follows the inclusion in April of ski halfpipe (men and women), women’s ski jumping, biathlon mixed relay, figure skating team event and luge team relay.

“We are very pleased with the addition of ski and snowboard slopestyle and snowboard special slalom in the Olympic Winter Games programme,” said IOC President Jacques Rogge. “Such events provide great entertainment for the spectators and add further youthful appeal to our already action-packed lineup of Olympic winter sports. We look forward to welcoming all the athletes to Sochi in 2014.”

The Olympic Programme Commission (OPC) initially proposed the inclusion of the events to the EB in Acapulco in October last year. The OPC studied the proposal of the individual International Sports Federations and, at the request of the EB, compiled a detailed analysis of all candidate events at their respective world championships last winter. The decision was also based on an operational feasibility study undertaken by the organisers of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games.

Olympic Stamps to Promote Sochi in Six Languages

The first four stamps in the series "XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Tourism on the Black Sea Coast of Russia" goes into circulation in autumn 2011. The Sochi 2014 stamps are unique in that they will be the most multi-lingual in the whole history of the Olympic movement. 6 versions of the sheets will be released in total, with the information on the labels and in the margins of the sheets in a different language on each: Russian, English, French, German, Spanish and Chinese.

The stamps will depict the sights of Sochi and the surrounding area: Krasnaya Polyana, the marine passenger terminal, the watchtower on the Bolshoy Akhun and the Volkonsky Dolmen, a unique monument to megalith culture in Sochi National Park. The stamps will be issued on a sheet made up of four stamps and four labels giving information about the sights depicted.

The first "Olympic" series of stamps go on sale in Russia in autumn 2011. They will cost 15, 20, 25 and 30 roubles respectively. In the future this series of stamps will also be sold abroad. Another four stamps in the series "XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Tourism on the Black Sea Coast of Russia" is planned for 2012.

The President of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, Dmitry Chernyshenko, noted:

"The history of issuing Olympic stamps goes back 115 years, to the first Olympic Games in Athens. I hope that the Sochi 2014 philatelic programme will continue the tradition begun at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. More than 70 stamps were issued for that event, and the total income from stamp sales was equivalent to 21 million dollars in today's money[1]. We plan to repeat that success and add a collection with unique images, real collector's items for Sochi 2014."

London 2012 offers a stage for all the world

Prime locations and historic premises are being snapped up all across the capital by nations, sponsors and international sporting bodies eager to make their own mark once the global circus hits town in July 2012 and to have fitting venues to celebrate their own achievements.

From the monumental Marble Arch in the west to a dried-out medieval moat around the Tower of London in the east, would-be temporary tenants are queuing up to get their hands on a piece of the city.

"So far we've helped over 50 NOCs (National Olympic Committees) and NPCs (National Paralympic Committees)," said Zanine Adams, head of event solutions for London&Partners, London's official promotional agency.

"We hope to attract such a huge number of visitors from all over the world and this is a great platform for them to showcase their countries, especially those that perhaps haven't ever done anything like this before," she told Reuters.

WINTER WONDERLAND

The Russians, hosts of the next Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014, have made the biggest splash with a plan to turn Marble Arch, a gleaming white landmark on a traffic island on the edge of the green acres of Hyde Park, into a spectacular winter wonderland.

Sochi World will, subject to all permissions being granted, offer an ice rink in the heart of London in July and August as well as a hospitality pavilion and visitor experience centre.

"While there will be a significant emphasis on culture, the ice rink will highlight sporting performance," Sochi 2014 president Dmitry Chernyshenko said in a recent statement.

"Russian figure-skating stars will give master classes for young British skaters, who in turn will be invited to participate in the Sochi World ice shows."

В Сочи в сезонах 2011-2012 и 2012-2013 годов в рамках предолимпийских тестовых соревнований пройдут 16 чемпионатов России (пять паралимпийских), 16 этапов Кубков мира (три паралимпийских), а также пять чемпионатов мира в различных возрастных категориях (два паралимпийских). Об этом Агентству спортивной информации «Весь спорт» сообщил заместитель министра спорта РФ Юрий Нагорных (на фото), курирующий зимние виды спорта и подготовку к Играм в Сочи, а также возглавляющий Межведомственную координационную комиссию по подготовке тестовых соревнований в Сочи.

Народный конкурс на лучшую идею Церемоний открытия и закрытия

1 июня 2011 года Организационный комитет «Сочи 2014» открывает прием заявок на «Конкурс на лучшую идею проведения Церемоний открытия и закрытия XXII Олимпийских зимних игр и Паралимпийских зимних игр 2014 года в г. Сочи».

В течение 6 месяцев творческие предложения можно подавать в электронном виде через официальный сайт Игр, где запущена отдельная страница, посвященная конкурсу. Победитель будет выбран Экспертным советом в период с 16 декабря 2011 г. по 24 декабря 2011.

“Olympiada-80” closing Ceremony Anniversary to be marked with new Sochi 2014 Public contest

The Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee is set to mark the 31st anniversary of the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games Closing ceremony with a National competition to come up with the best idea for the Sochi 2014 XXII Olympic and Paralympic Games Opening and Closing ceremonies. The winner will receive two tickets to the Opening ceremony for Russia’s first ever Winter Olympics and will be chosen in the mid December, 2011. The winner’s ideas then may become a base of the final script for the Sochi 2014 Games Opening and Closing ceremonies that will be brought to life by a special creative group of the best Russian and international international producers.

There are still six month left for the public to submit their ideas. The winner will be chosen by an expert council after the entry deadline on 24th December 2011. The expert council will consist of Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee representatives, prominent Russian theatre figures, script writers and experienced mass event producers.

The Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee has already received hundreds of interesting works for the contest. They include a person from Moscow who proposed to make a flag of living birds, which will fly over the stadium. Another entry from Ossetia proposed to stage a meeting between Sochi 2014 Mascot Polar Bear and the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games Mascot Bear.

Каждый третий уверен в победе сборной России на Играх в Сочи

Большинство россиян (68% ) считают, что Россия войдет в тройку лидеров в медальном зачете на Олимпиаде Сочи-2014. Такие данные были получены в ходе опроса исследовательским холдингом РОМИР. Причем 36% респондентов уверены, что российская сборная займет первое место.

По мнению экспертов, уровень ожиданий граждан от сборной скорее растет, чем падает, несмотря на неутешительные итоги последней Олимпиады в Ванкувере, где Россия смогла завоевать лишь 11-е место. Для сравнения: 7 лет назад, в июле 2004г., накануне Олимпиады в Афинах только 64% россиян были уверены, что Россия займет место на одной из трех ступенек почетного пьедестала в командном зачете. Причем лишь 20% рассчитывали на первое место.

При этом доля респондентов, более скептически оценивающих будущие завоевания российской сборной, все же немного выросла и составила более четверти опрошенных (27%). Доля пессимистов сравнительно выше среди респондентов с высоким уровнем доходов (37%). В мегаполисах с населением более 1 млн человек этот показатель еще выше - 41% опрошенных считают, что Россия не займет первые места на пьедестале.

Тем не менее россияне планируют активно наблюдать за ходом Олимпиады. Доля россиян, которые не собираются следить за играми, остается практически неизменной - около 8% (в 2004г. она составила 7). Большинство россиян (81%) собираются смотреть трансляцию игр в Сочи по телевизору, 8% - трансляции в интернете.

Согласно данным опроса, почти 3% респондентов выражают намерение поехать в Сочи, чтобы присутствовать на играх в качестве зрителей. Чаще других видят в перспективе себя на сочинских трибунах молодые люди в возрасте 18-24 лет (5% опрошенных в этой группе), принадлежащие к категории студентов. Наиболее легкими на подъем могут оказаться молодые болельщики из Сибирского, Уральского, Южного и Северо-Западного регионов. Уровень дохода пока не оказывает значимого влияния на планы поездки.

Эксперты также выявили, что только треть россиян (28%) считают, что Россия готова к Олимпиаде на 70% и более. Среди жителей Южного федерального округа (ЮФО), которые лучше информированы о ходе подготовительных работ, по крайней мере в части строительства олимпийских объектов, этот показатель значительно выше. Почти половина респондентов в ЮФО (45% ) считают, что наша страна уже на 70% и более готова к главному событию 2014г.

Во всероссийском опросе приняли участие 1 тыс. 500 жителей России, в возрасте от 18 до 60 лет и старше, из 8 федеральных округов России.
