LT provide the link to this regulation (http://www.consultant.ru/popular/koap/13_7.html#p1495) which IMO is not excessively done. If as a gay men lives a normal not show-off way of life, he or she should be fine. I do not know if Johnny read the law carefully, maybe, since his husband was Russian. :plush34:

Johnny is again playing drama-queen. Kissing with Voronov in Red Square or performing to Lady Gaga is not a crime in Russia.
Propaganda same-sex relationships among minors is administrative offence, punishable by fine $123-154 or 15 days of administrative arrest, i.e. they are not in prison with criminals. They are in a special police facility. It's an administrative offence.
I can get administrative arrest for walking topless in Red Square, for example.

У челябинских фигуристов начались ледовые тренировки
http://chelyabinsk.rfn.ru/rnews.html?id=823203&cid=7

-------------------------------

So, Test skating of senior skaters will not be before end of august :plush38:

I do not like violation of anyone's "human rights", but I also do not like when it's used for political purposes :ze_le_ny: ... at least, Plushy is not mentioned in a negative context :plush34:

IOC stands by Russia's reassurance on anti-gay law

The International Olympic Committee said for the time being it is standing by reassurances that athletes and visitors attending the 2014 Sochi Games in Russia will not be affected by anti-gay legislation.

"We rest with comments made directly to us by deputy PM Kozak," IOC spokesman Mark Adams wrote in an email Thursday, referring to Russian deputy prime minster Dmitry Kozak.

The country's sports minister contradicted those assurances in an interview with state news agency R-Sport. "An athlete of nontraditional sexual orientation isn't banned from coming to Sochi. But if he goes out into the streets and starts to propagandize, then of course he will be held accountable," Vitaly Mutko said.

In June, Russian president Vladimir Putin signed an anti-gay bill that outlaws "homosexual propaganda" making public events that promote gay rights and public displays of affection by same-sex couples illegal. Foreign citizens arrested under the law can be jailed for 15 days and then deported.

Gay-rights groups have asked NBC, which holds U.S. broadcasting rights for Sochi, and the IOC to take a stronger stand.

The global Human Rights Watch wrote Thursday on its website, "Instead of listening to Russia's hollow assurances, IOC president Jacques Rogge should stand up for the Olympic charter's commitment to promoting human dignity and insist that the Russian government immediately takes steps to repeal the law and, in the meantime, refrains from implementing it."

A Cincinnati woman is among people organizing campaigns to persuade companies including Cincinnati-based Procter & Gamble to drop sponsorship of the Sochi Olympics.

Julianne Howell's petition posted on Change.org had received more than 71,000 signatures as of Thursday afternoon. In the petition she also calls for Coca-Cola, Panasonic, Samsung and Visa to pull their sponsorships from the Sochi Games. "It's time for these companies to put their support for LGBT people first, and send a message to Russia that their anti-gay laws are not only contrary to basic human rights, but fly in the face of the spirit of the Olympic Games, which celebrate human dignity and community above all else," Howell wrote.

Athletes have also been vocal about their opposition to the law. Figure skater Johnny Weir, a self-described "Russophile" who hopes to compete in his third Olympics in Sochi, said he the anti-gay laws will not dissuade him. "I have been invited to perform in Saint Petersburg, Russia, birthplace of the anti-gay propaganda movement, and with luck on my side, I will be there come October," Weir wrote Thursday in his regular column for the Falls Church (Va.) News-Press.

"I am far too passionate about supporting the community on the ground rather than to watch from the sidelines and do nothing aside from drinking Swedish or Polish vodka instead of Russian. I will perform in a country who's government would prefer having me in prison than entertaining her population, because I support the population and not the government. Should anything happen to me, please notify my mother and my husband."

Weir is married to Victor Voronov, whose parents grew up in the former Soviet Union. The skater's close friend is the nation's biggest figure skating star, Evgeni Plushenko.

Olympic diver Greg Louganis joined advocate group Athlete Ally's campaign in response to the legislation. The group is working with the global LGBT rights organization All Out and other sports leaders on a coordinated response.

Other gay rights activists have campaigned that bars stop selling Russian vodka.

Politicians also have voiced their concern. Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, sent a letter to Russian Ambassador Sergey I. Kislyak expressing outrage with Russia's anti-gay law. "Under the new law, the mere act of publically acknowledging one's sexuality or displaying rainbow flags could be deemed punishable offenses under the statute. Such a law is clearly inconsistent with, and contradictory to, the International Olympic Committee's Charter," Markey wrote.

Last month after Sen. Lindsey Graham suggested boycotting the Sochi Olympics if Russia grants asylum to National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden (as it did Thursday), the idea was roundly rejected by House Speaker John Boehner and the U.S. Olympic Committee.

"These are serious issues but they are not solved by Olympic boycotts," USOC CEO Scott Blackmun told USA TODAY Sports. "It is an issue that is concerning to the IOC and the IOC is in discussions with authorities in Russia about how to ensure everybody goes to Russia for the Olympic Games, but especially our athletes, don't feel persecuted while they're there. We fully support the position that Johnny Weir and Greg Louganis have taken."

I do not really understand the fuss. Yes it is unfortunate that Russia passed such law, but the law itself does not really against being gay people but gay propaganda (I think especially towards minors who are more vulnerable to various ideas).

And it is kind of domestic affair, like if you go to a middle-east country, you should at least respect the local law. So I do not understand why they thought it would affect athletes. Unless all the these gay athletes decided to show their affection towards their partners publicly (like weir does), they would not be affected by this law :plush34:

The violation of rights take place when something granted was taken away by law. They make it sound like gay athletes were planning to come to Sochi to advertise homosexuality among minors. But now the law took this "right" away from them. The funniest part is nobody in media or pro-gay FSU realizes that by saying how bad the law that forbids propaganda of homosex among minors is, they basically portrait themselves as perverts with pedophilic issues. Why a gay athletes would want to advertise homosexuality among minors in the first place? :kli_ny:

The Russian Foreign Ministry has been perplexed by the nature of the reaction, according to a statement by the Ministry's Commissioner for Human Rights Konstantin Dolgov.

“It bears remembering that this legislation has nothing to do with discrimination against sexual minorities, which, as any other discrimination, is absolutely prohibited by the Constitution of the Russian Federation. The amendments have been adopted solely for the sake of protecting children, who can be too young to objectively and critically assess the information forced upon them, which might do harm to their psyche and imbed distorted perceptions concerning human relations,” Dolgov said.

Speaking about a middle-east country, I don't remember any outrage in the US media or anywhere else when Qatar won the host ticket for FIFA World CUP 2022. In Qatar sodomy is a crime punishable of 1-3 years in prison. Everyone was quite about that, unike in case with Russia. No gay soccer players? Of course yes. It's just Qatar is not G8 country and doesn't mean much in global politics. Gays are simpy being used like whores by politicians when it's required, and not used when it's not.

Johnny is a walking manual for self-PR. He gets extra attention to make bucks and to rise his chances to get a spot in Team US for Olympics, which are quite miserable anyway.

Thanks for explanations... and about pointing the hypocrisy of American politic, which care about "human rights" in other countries - only if it happens in a country which is their "a political opponent." :ze_le_ny:

But I think you're not right about Johnny's motivation - at 1st place, he just does not want to boycott the Olympics, 2nd - he wants to be improving the situation of gay rights in Russia. All his arguments are actually his "a defense" against a possible attack on him in the United States.... another thing is that U.S. media used him for their purposes, mentioned the above :plush34:
