Plushenko on Sochi track, says Mishin

One man who will likely not sport yellow this season, Evgeni Plushenko, isn't competing at Skate America, but reporters deluged his longtime coach, Alexei Mishin, with questions about the three-time world champion's chances to qualify for a fourth Olympic Games.

Plushenko won Olympic gold in 2006 and silver in 2002 and 2010. He, along with fellow Mishin pupil Artur Gachinski, Maxim Kovtun, Sergei Voronov and Konstantin Menshov, are generally considered to be vying for Russia's single men's spot in Sochi.

"He does now triple Axel and he does quad toe," Mishin said, quickly whipping out a smartphone to play a video of Plushenko landing a solid triple Axel. "He still has screws in his back, and with this it is not so simple to do jumps, but he is very powerfully charged to be a skater."

Plushenko, who withdrew from the 2013 European Figure Skating Championships after the short program due to a back injury, underwent spinal disc replacement surgery in Tel Aviv in January. Mishin wasn't sure when, or if, the screws would be removed, but work on his pupil's free skate -- a mélange of past programs, titled "The Best of Plushenko" -- continues apace in St. Petersburg.

"This [free skate] was my idea," Mishin said with pride. "I should love my own ideas. If I did not love myself, nobody would love me."

If Gachinski's performance at Skate America this week is any indication, Plushenko may be a step closer to Sochi. The 2011 world bronze medalist placed eighth, and last, after missing many of his jumps.

"Of course, Russian nationals will be a fight for him," said Mishin, who has trained Plushenko since the skater was 11 or 12. "All his life was a struggle for himself. Nobody ever awarded him any gold medals for free, just for the hard work."

As many hours as Plushenko puts in the rink, though, he still takes time out for fun.

"He is not crazy," Mishin said. "He loves golf. He loves hunting. He loves his children (one with a previous wife, one with his current wife and two stepchildren).

"Plushenko is not like a figure skating paranoid. He loves life also."

Yevgeny Plushenko offers update on his training for Sochi Olympics

Russian Olympic figure skating champion Yevgeny Plushenko, who has not competed since January, is training twice a day and still wants to compete at the Sochi Olympics.

“I’m trying to compete,” Plushenko, the 2006 gold medalist, told R-Sport. “Only victory. I’m training and my goal is the Sochi Olympics, exactly that, and to compete. Not to be a spectator, but to compete.”

The 30-year-old is trying to return from a back injury and win a medal at a fourth straight Olympics.

Russia only earned one men’s figure skating spot at the Olympics, but the coach of one of Plushenko’s top competitors for the berth recently said Plushenko will be given the spot if healthy.

Plushenko is entered in the Rostelecom Cup in Moscow, a Grand Prix event from Nov. 22-24. The Russian National Championships are in December, though the winner there is not guaranteed to be given the Olympic spot.

Should he get to Sochi, Plushenko will have two chances to become the second figure skater to win four career Olympic medals. He has the singles event and the new team event, where Russia figures to vie with the United States, Canada and Japan for gold.

Plushenko’s rival from the 2010 Olympics, American Evan Lysacek, is also training for a comeback. Lysacek has not competed since winning gold at the 2010 Games and pulled out of last weekend’s Skate America with a hip injury.

What is now problem? In some Russian media on Monday, came the news about the alleged Plushy's suspension (old news from 2010)
Plushy (in russian version, down) actually made ​​denial this false information, even Piseev denied it. But in the English version (which is supposed to be just translation of the Russian original news) - there is no mentioned his reason for the denial, just "that some people suspect that he will be in forme for the Olympics"... Without mentioning of reason, Plushy's reaction seems like he is some paranoid lunatic

Олимпийский чемпион по фигурному катанию Евгений Плющенко заявил агентству "Р-Спорт", что не понимает ошибок журналистов, которые выдают новости трехгодичной давности за свежую информацию и опроверг слухи о том, что не выступит на Олимпиаде-2014 в Сочи.

В понедельник в интернете появилась информация о том, что олимпийский чемпион Турина-2006 Плющенко не выступит на Олимпиаде в Сочи в 2014 году из-за нарушения регламента Международного союза конькобежцев (ISU). В 2010 году Плющенко был лишен любительского статуса из-за того, что, сославшись на травму, снялся с чемпионата мира-2010, но вскоре принял участие в нескольких шоу, не получив на то разрешения ISU. Тогда в СМИ появилась информация, что из-за этих санкций россиянин не сможет выступить в Сочи. В конце мая 2011 года Федерации фигурного катания на коньках России (ФФККР) направила в ISU официальное ходатайство с просьбой о снятии с олимпийского чемпиона санкций. В июне 2011 года Плющенко вернули любительский статус.

"Не знаю, как это журналисты делают, почему не проверяют информацию. Все знают мой телефон, знают, что я тренируюсь и моя цель как раз - Олимпиада в Сочи. Именно выступить. Не быть как зритель, а выступить", - сказал Плющенко по телефону.

"Неспроста я пошел на операцию на позвоночнике и делал сложнейшую операцию, чтобы выступать этот сезон и выступить на Олимпийских Играх. Поэтому все, что написано и сказано, что я выступать не собираюсь или не буду... наоборот, я готовлюсь, тренируюсь. Каждый день хожу на тренировки, по две в день. Постараюсь выступить: только победа", - добавил спортсмен.

Исполнительный директор ФФККР Валентин Писеев в комментарии агентству "Р-Спорт" заявил, что "этой глупости даже опровержение нет смысла делать". "Плющенко сам много раз говорил, что готовится к ОИ. Это ошибка", - добавил Писеев.
