- You got together during a difficult time for Maxim: he retired from the competitive sport when he was still full of energy, in his prime. Did you get over it together?
Maxim. Actually, this period is not over yet. But Irina brought some peace into my life, the understanding that everything is already here and there is no need to rush. As for my retirement, of course, me and Oksana Domnina, we could do much more if it was not for my injury. But apparently, it is the way it should be. For some reason we have to go through all this.

Russian figure skaters on collectors’ coins
The Central Bank of Russia announced on Monday the release of silver coins in honor of figure skating icons Irina Rodnina, Alexander Zaitsev, Lyudmila Pakhomova and Alexander Gorshkov.
A total of 3,000 such coins with a nominal value of three rubles will be issued, a Central Bank spokesman explained.

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) released two decisions on Dec. 23 regarding comments on an American figure skater broadcast during the 2010 Winter Olympics.
The first decision dealt with comments made by host Claude Mailhot and guest analyst Alain Goldberg on Le réveil olympique, which was broadcast on Réseau des sports and V.
The host and the analyst discussed men’s figure skating and commented on the costume of American competitor Johnny Weir, who had worn lipstick and a black and pink outfit.
Mailhot and Goldberg expressed concern Weir was perpetuating a stereotype of men’s skating as an effeminate sport. They also joked that Weir should undergo gender testing, and acknowledged that their statements might not be viewed as “politically correct.”
Mailhot and Goldberg apologized on air two days later for their comments.
The CBSC said it received 119 complaints about the broadcast.
The CBSC’s Quebec Regional Panel said the show’s discussion could have been “better, safer, more tasteful,” but concluded that the comments were not particularly negative and “certainly not abusive” on the basis of sexual orientation.
The second decision dealt with comments made on Dupont le midi, a talk show broadcast on RNC Media’s CHOI-FM radio station in Quebec City.
On Feb. 19, host Stéphane Dupont said he could not understand why Mailhot’s and Goldberg’s comments had generated so much controversy because they had pointed out there was “a queer in a sport for queers.”
The CBSC’s Quebec panel found that Dupont’s comments violated the Canadian Association of Broadcasters’ human rights clauses.

Johnny Weir No Longer Skating Around the Gay Thing
Johnny Weir has a memoir coming out soon called "Welcome to My World" and savvy marketing chap that he is, he's promoting it by leaking/selling excerpts to People magazine. The big news (or non-news) is that Weir finally, explicitly comes out as gay: "With people killing themselves and being scared into the closet, I hope that even just one person can gain strength from my story."
In the People article, Weir talks about his childhood when he was often mistaken for a little girl. Also, his often being called a "homo" or "faggot" by middle school students. He also mentions a clandestine affair he had with another male skater he refers to only as "Alex."
Weir also discusses the pressure he felt from gay websites who "couldn't figure out why I was such a jerk that I wouldn't talk it [being gay]."
"A lot of the gays got downright angry about my silence. But pressure is the last thing that would make me want to 'join' a community."
Well, we were probably one of those gay websites he refers to, and I can't say we were angry so much as sincerely frustrated that Weir played coy for so long. It made him awfully hard to write about or appreciate. What did it say about gay visibility when someone so visibly gay seemed obstinate in refusing to own up to it? How could he be considered a role model?
Weir ends with...
"I'm not ashamed to be me. More than anyone else I know, I love my life and accept myself. What's wrong with being unique? I am proud of everything that I am and will become."
And at last, GLBT fans looking for out gay role models can be proud of him as well.

Well, we were probably one of those gay websites he refers to, and I can't say we were angry so much as sincerely frustrated that Weir played coy for so long. It made him awfully hard to write about or appreciate. What did it say about gay visibility when someone so visibly gay seemed obstinate in refusing to own up to it? How could he be considered a role model?
Weir ends with...
"I'm not ashamed to be me. More than anyone else I know, I love my life and accept myself. What's wrong with being unique? I am proud of everything that I am and will become."
And at last, GLBT fans looking for out gay role models can be proud of him as well.

He also mentions a clandestine affair he had with another male skater he refers to only as "Alex."
Just a question: does this undefined "Alex" agree with this outing? I mean: JW is free to manage his life as he likes, saying whatever he wants and doing all the coming-outs that he likes; but what's the point of dragging other people into his choices? It's well known that there are many hidden gays in sports, not only in Figure Skating, but not all of them put makeup on their faces and wear women's clothes, not everybody shows off effeminate movements, etc etc.. I mean, not everyone likes to be noted for sexual orientation, which is considered a private thing. I agree with a "coming out", if someone wants to do it. I can't say the same if someone speaks about others, disclosing someone else's confidential informations!

Even worse. This statement will start the hunt for the "JW's clandestine lover". There will not be a single journalist or just a curious who will not wonder himself, looking at every skater in the world: "Maybe this one? Perhaps the other one?". As for me, I don't like this kind of "sport".
