The leader after the short program, Joubert extended his advantage in the free skate with a strong skate, landing his opening quad toe and two triple axels to win by over 20 points. Amodio also started his free skate off strongly, hitting his quad salchow. But he doubled both of his triple axels and popped his final three jumps to finish with the silver for the second year in a row. Amodio won the French title during one of the two years that Joubert did not compete at the competition. Chafik Besseghier hit four triples in his free skate to take the bronze...

Daisuke Takahashi produces monster score of 96.05 points at Japanese nationals. 4T-3T, 3A, 3Lz. Even with natsinflation impressive!

Takahashi rockets to the top after the short at Japanese Nationals:
http://www.examiner.com/figure-skating- ... -nationals

The Japan Figure Skating Championships got off to a rousing start today with the men’s short program as 2010 World champion Daisuke Takahashi found himself with a huge lead of over ten points after a terrific short program. Takahashi is looking for his fifth national title after a third-place finish last season.

Takahashi has not looked more prepared in his career than he did in the short program, where he opened with a quad toe-triple toe combination. It was the first time all season that he has successfully completed a quad in competition. The rest of his short program was equally strong and spectacular, as he hit the rest of his elements to earn a 96.05 and a more than comfortable cushion over the rest of the men going into the free skate.

As expected, Takahashi’s closest competition was World silver medalist Takahiko Kozuka, who is current in second. Opting for a more technically conservative approach, Kozuka was also clean in his short program. But without a quad in his program, he lost ground to Takahashi, making his effort to defend his title much more difficult. He is currently behind Takahashi with a score of 85.60.

Former Japanese junior champion Tatsuki Machida scored a slight upset with a third-place showing over pre-competition podium favorite Yuzuru Hanyu. Machida held on to his opening triple axel and went on to hit the rest of his elements to score a 74.64.

Hanyu, coming off a fourth place finish a few weeks ago at the Grand Prix Final, lost valuable base points when he tripled his opening quad toe and later did a double toe on the end of his triple lutz combination instead of a triple. He is behind Machida by less than half a point.

In pairs, two-time World junior medalists Narumi Takahashi and Mervin Tran are at the event without competitors, scoring a 57.42 with their short program.

Upset in the making? Murakami bests Asada, Suzuki in Japanese Nationals short

Former World junior champion Kanako Murakami stunned favorites Mao Asada and Akiko Suzuki today at the Japan Figure Skating Championships to lead the short program. Murakami took the ice well before her other two main competitors but was able to maintain her lead, edging out Asada by less than a quarter of a point.

After a lackluster Grand Prix series this season, Murakami saved her best stuff so far this season for her home championships. She hit a clean short, highlighted by a clean triple toe-triple toe and a solo triple flip. The judges rewarded her with a 65.56 to give her the edge in the short program over the rest of the field.

Right behind is Asada, who was also clean in her Scheherazade short program but lacked the difficulty of Murakami’s skate. Asada is competing for the first time since the death of her mother just days before the start of the Grand Prix Final in early December. As she has done this season, she left out her triple axel in favor of a double and hit the rest of her elements, including a triple flip-double loop combination and a solo triple loop, to sit in second with a 65.40.

Suzuki, coming off a silver medal at the Grand Prix Final, was the last of the 29 ladies to skate and had trouble with her opening jump combination, singling her second part of her triple toe-triple toe combination. She recovered with to land her solo triple lutz and double axel, but with the loss of about four points in base value, she was unable to keep up with the two leaders. She scored a 59.60 and is six points behind the two leaders going into the free skate.

The rest of the talented Japanese ladies did not disappoint. Former Japanese junior silver medalist Yuki Nishino is in fourth after hitting her short program, edging out a clean Haruka Imai. They are within striking distance of Suzuki, with third place and fifth place being separated by only two points.

In ice dance, in the absence of four-time and reigning Japanese champions Cathy Reed and Chris Reed, Burina Oi and Taiyo Mizutani took the lead in the short dance over Emi Hirai and Marien De La Asuncion. Now competing against each other, Hirai and Mizutani skated together for the past two seasons and were the reigning silver medalists.
