It’s the C(h)anadians: Chan breaks century mark, leads short by 20

Skating his first clean short program of the season, World champion Patrick Chan steamrolled over the competition at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships, where he has been known to deliver some of the best skating in his career. He is currently in first place by an unheard of 20 points over his nearest competitor, breaking the 100-point barrier with his clean skate.

There was no chance that anyone was even going to be close to Chan after he hit his opening quad toe-triple toe and triple axel to start his short program. He slammed the door shut with the solo triple lutz and went on to bring the crowd to its feet with a spectacular performance. It was the first time in four competitions this season that he skated a clean short program, and the judges rewarded him well with a 101.33. He is looking for his fifth consecutive Canadian title.

Behind Chan but solidly in second place is former Canadian bronze medalist Kevin Reynolds, who landed his opening quad salchow-triple toe as he is trying to redeem his thus-far lackluster season. He scored an 80.81 with his strong short program, which featured clean jumps but was slightly marred by a messy camel-change-camel spin. Nevertheless, he is currently ten points ahead of the rest of the men.

Returning to competition after surgery derailed the second half of his season last year, 2009 bronze medalist Jeremy Ten fell on his opening triple axel but recovered to skate the rest of his program cleanly for a short program score of 70.81, just over two points ahead of Elladj Balde, who also had trouble with his triple axel.

It was a known fact a long time ago, after Dai hit 96 at J-Nationals. Chanadian judges took notes :ze_le_ny:. In fact, I can't even compare Dai's masterpiece with Chan's quite nothing special skating. Oh, wait! That was special: he didn't zamboni the ice! Unbelievable. But because of that he was even more dull. The law of irony.

Looking unbeatable, Chan steamrolls to fifth career Canadian title

World champion Patrick Chan became the first person since Elvis Stojko to win five Canadian titles in a row in the men’s event today at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships. Chan’s dominance was overwhelming, skating two near-flawless programs to finish the competition with a score of over 300 points, a whopping 62.70 points ahead of the rest of the competition.

Chan came into the free skate with a 20-point lead from a clean short program. With no threat to his march to the gold, he wowed the crowd and the judges once again with a two-quad, seven-triple free skate that blew everyone else out of the water. In addition to his two quad toes to open the program, he hit a superb triple axel, a triple lutz-half loop-triple salchow, and a triple flip-triple toe combination.

His final score of 302.14 is unheard of – and Chan holds the record for the highest total score ever recorded in international competition (280.98 at the 2011 World Championships). Though Canadians a national competition – national events are known to give out higher marks than international events – and will not count toward establishing a new world record, Chan’s final score is still a mark of how remarkably he skated. And his performances this week makes him look more unbeatable than ever.

After a struggle during the Grand Prix series, Kevin Reynolds found his jumping rhythm again this week. He landed a quad toe and a quad salchow, but his quad loop attempt was downgraded. Even with a few underrotations on his later triple jumps, this week has been a redeeming one for the 21-year old, who records his best placement ever at Canadians, capturing the silver with a 239.44.

2009 Canadian bronze medalist Jeremy Ten held on to his third place spot after a shaky free skate that included a fall on his opening triple axel and his final jump, a triple flip. But his advantage from the short program was large enough for him to take the bronze medal with a final total of 207.50.

Former Canadian junior champion Elladj Balde put down a strong free skate, hitting six clean triples to finish third in the free skate and fourth overall, less than one point behind Ten. World junior champion Andrei Rogozine had trouble with his two triple axels but was able to move up from sixth to finish in fifth place with six triples in his free skate.

OK. I think "4toe+2toe" this is enough information, it can know this is combination.... :mi_ga_et: :-)

Armin Mahbanoozadeh - nice sequence of steps into triple axel, triple flip-triple toe (nice), steps into triple lutz - clean skate for the first time all season, that move and coaching change really reinvigorated him, well done - TES 44.54, PCS 36.12, SP SCORE 80.66

Jeremy Abbott - triple flip-triple toe (so smooth), triple axel (solid), steps into triple lutz - well sold, well done, that's going to be unbeatable tonight - TES 45.78, PCS 44.45, SP SCORE 90.23

Jason Brown - double axel, triple lutz-triple toe (nice), steps into triple flip, great innovative positions on his final combo spin - nice clean, though conservative, skate for Brown, but he's really a great talent to watch - TES 39.29, PCS 36.39, SP SCORE 75.68

Final group on the ice to warm up: Brown, Abbott, Mahbanoozadeh, Farris, Carriere.

Keegan Messing - triple axel (big!), triple lutz-triple toe (just holds on with a bit of a quick foot down), steps into triple flip - TES 41.44, PCS 35.22, SP SCORE 76.66

Douglas Razzano - Rach 2 - triple axel (nice!), quad toe (fall, possibly underrotated), triple toe-triple toe - nice program, for sure, the quad toe just looked rushed right before the pick-in - TES 39.17, PCS 34.33, FALL -1.00, SP SCORE 72.50

Brandon Mroz - Mack the Knife - quad toe (fall), triple axel (scratchy on the landing but hangs on for a one-foot), steps into triple lutz-double toe - TES 34.43, PCS 34.04, FALL -1.00, SP SCORE 67.47

Grant Hochstein - Clair de Lune - triple lutz-triple toe (ekes out the toe), triple axel (looked underrotated, fall), steps into triple loop - TES 35.03, PCS 33.86, FALL -1.00, SP SCORE 67.89

Max Aaron - quad salchow (nice), triple axel (solid), triple lutz (hand down)-triple toe (a bit of a step out) - nice program from Aaron, great jumps and solid skating - well done, lots of potential with this kid - TES 42.76, PCS 33.25, SP SCORE 76.01

Third group out on the ice for warmup. Skate order: Aaron, Hochstein, Mroz, Razzano, Messing.

Ice cut! The most impressive skate so far is, by miles, Adam Rippon's short - not only because it was clean, but because he looked pretty fearless out there for the first time all season. The next ten skaters are going to be putting on quite a show ... lots of firepower coming up.

Daniel Raad - triple axel (squeezes that one out), triple flip (turns out)-triple toe (muscles out the triple toe), steps into triple lutz super late in the program (downgrade, fall) - TES 26.76, PCS 21.35, FALL -1.00, SP SCORE 47.11

Wesley Campbell - Aranjuez - single lutz-double toe, double axel, steps into double flip - TES 18.07, PCS 27.86, SP SCORE 45.93

Jonathan Cassar - Moulin Rouge - triple lutz-double toe, ina bauer into double axel, steps into triple loop (hangs on), that inside spread eagle is just to die for - TES 33.40, PCS 34.46, SP SCORE 67.86

Ross Miner - can't say I've really ever been a fan of the opening of this program - solid triple axel, triple lutz-triple toe (a bit scratchy on the landing of the toe, foot really quickly comes down), steps into triple flip - nice job for Miner, will be behind Rippon w/that jittery combo - TES 41.48, PCS 37.42, SP SCORE 78.90

William Brewster - a whole lot of forward crossovers into triple salchow-triple toe, steps into triple lutz (just a bit of a turn out on it), double axel - TES 30.37, PCS 25.33, SP SCORE 55.70

Second group on the ice for warmup - Brewster, Miner, Cassar, Campbell, Raad. Not sure if a clean Ross Miner can overtake Rippon, but it's probably going to be close if Miner does go clean.

Alexander Aiken - Paint It Black - triple axel (downgrade likely, hand down, two-foot), lots of speed into triple lutz-triple toe (squeaked out the toe, might be underrotated), stars into double flip - TES 23.87, PCS 26.18, SP SCORE 49.05

Alexander Johnson - double axel, steps into triple flip (a bit of a flip of the edge on the landing, but held on), triple lutz (underrotated? fall out), fell out of the camel part of his final combination spin (just kind of an iffy spin all around) - TES 25.33, PCS 32.40, SP SCORE 57.73

Scott Dyer - triple salchow-triple loop (fall), double axel, steps into triple lutz (hangs on, one foot), great combo spin to end - TES 33.60, PCS 33.89, FALL -1.00, SP SCORE 66.49

Adam Rippon - triple flip-triple toe (nice), triple axel (a bit slow but landed), triple Rippon lutz - the best he's looked in quite a while, there was a confidence about him in that short program that screamed, "I'm ready!" - TES 44.08, PCS 38.86, SP SCORE 82.94

Richard Dornbush - triple lutz (fall), single axel, steps into single flip - yikes, this is a complete disaster for Dornbush - that's almost as bad as it gets, unfortunately - TES 19.73, PCS 32.86, FALL -1.00, SP SCORE 51.59

First group on the ice for warmup! Skate order: Dornbush, Rippon, Dyer, Johnson, Aiken. Two skaters who could very well be in the top five will be leading off ... good stuff to start.

Pregame analysis: Unlike what we've seen in the Grand Prix, the men's short today won't be a quad fest, though there will be a few skaters who will be including one in their program. But many of the top guys, including Abbott, will likely be doing all-triple programs. That said, look for the quad to potentially add surprises to the mix - just like Agnes Zawadzki vaulted straight to the top last night with a triple-triple combo, a clean quad could shake things up.

Stay tuned - right here! - for live up-to-the-second play-by-play coverage of the men's short program at U.S. Nationals tonight starting at 10 p.m. Eastern (7:00 p.m. Pacific). It's shaping up to be quite an event, with a talented field of skaters ready for the challenge. If you're looking for a crash course on the top contenders, take a look at Examiner Figure Skating's preview and predictions of the men's event.

The start order is below - the names to watch for: Dornbush starts it off, Rippon goes 2nd, Miner 7th, Mroz 13th, Razzano 14th, Brown 16th, Abbott 17th, Mahbanoozadeh 18th, Farris 19th, Carriere 20th and last. Those final two groups are jam-packed!
