Takahashi seals golden comeback

VANTAA, Finland (Kyodo) Daisuke Takahashi marked his comeback from a lengthy injury layoff with a commanding victory at the Finlandia Trophy on Saturday.

Holding a lead of more than 13 points after Friday's short program, the former world silver medalist placed second in the free skate with 141.02 points, but finished well clear of Russian Sergei Voronov with a winning total of 224.25.

"I won the event but am not really satisfied with the way I skated," said Takahashi, who missed the whole of last season after major surgery to repair torn ligaments in his right knee.

"I showed a lack of power on my steps and spins. Skating in this event was a good way to find out what I need to work on in order to accomplish my goal of winning the gold medal at the (2010 Vancouver) Olympics."

Pic of the Week

Image

Sergei Voronov is another one of those skaters I would consider a 'Dark Horse' in any competition. While he's yet to win a major international title, he's shown flashes of brilliance in his career.

While he finished second at last week's Finlandia Trophy, he won the free skate in that competition ahead of Daisuke Takahashi. He did so with a textbook quad toe-loop. When Voronov gets in the zone his jumps are some of the best in the world. Some of that may be attributed to his coach, Olympic Champion Alexei Urmanov, who also was known for solid jump technique.

He's also been a skater that's not been afraid to break the mold of Russian skaters, he's a little different than the others...in a good way I believe.

He'll have a chance to prove his case this week as he goes up against a dense men's field at Trophy Eric Bompard. If he can medal there (perhaps win) he'll set himself up nicely for this season.

Voronov's goal this season should be to keep the Russian spotlight on him and not let it move over to Plushenko. A tough task to be sure, he's going to have to produce results to do it.

Patrick Chan withdraws from Russia Grand Prix

Canadian Patrick Chan has withdrawn from next week's ISU Grand Prix figure skating event in Russia because of a tear in his left calf.

Chan hopes to compete as scheduled at the HomeSense Skate Canada International in Kitchener, Ont., Nov. 19-22.

Skate Canada high performance director Mike Slipchuk said: "Patrick was really excited about competing for the first time in Russia. After consultation with his doctors and coach, however, it was the right decision to withdraw from this event at this point in the year.

"It's important for Patrick to get back to 100 per cent in preparation for the season ahead, which includes the upcoming 2010 Olympic Winter Games.'

Chan blames muscle tear on flu

Toronto figure skater Patrick Chan says pushing himself too hard, too soon after a bout of influenza caused a muscle in his calf - an injury that has sidelined the 18-year-old from next week's Grand Prix event in Russia.

Chan came down with an illness last month that kept him from skating for much of the Vancouver high performance training camp.

"We even believe it might have been H1N1 because the symptoms were quite similar," Chan said in a conference call, Thursday.

"I lost a lot of weight, lost a lot of my muscle power and mass. I think together it just combined and really brought down my muscle strength way down," Chan said. "And also I was so hard headed that I thought I could do certain jumps that I shouldn't have and I pushed my body when I should have just waited for it to heal."

It was two weeks before Chan was able to return to the ice, he said. Once skating again, a pain developed in his left calf and grew steadily worse.

"Nobody really found the real problem with my calf until I came home just recently. Just on Wednesday," Chan said, "I saw the doctor and he found that I had a tear in my calf- a slight muscle tear in my calf."

Chan also learned that the antibiotics he had been given to battle the flu were known for breaking down muscle mass, and believes that may have contributed to the tear.

Chan says the injury is not overly painful, and he can even skate through it. However, the tear is in his takeoff leg and it hinders his jumping.

"The recovery is about a week. Maybe five days from now I'll be able to start jumping," he said.

By pulling out of the Russia competition, Chan hopes to be completely healed by Skate Canada next month. The competition in Kitchener, Waterloo, is the only other Grand Prix event on Chan's schedule.

Because he will also be ineligible to compete in the Grand Prix final in December, Skate Canada will also be Chan's only chance to compete in front of international judges.

"The only disadvantage is not having the chance to show the program and kind of get a chance to kind of fine-tune the program, especially in competition," Chan said. "I just look forward to going to Skate Canada now. I'm very hungry to come out and skate harder."

Verner impresses while Joubert disappoints
Oda second; Rippon a surprising third

(10/16/2009) - Tomas Verner escaped his usual early-season doldrums to take a 1.80-point lead after the men's short program.

The charismatic Czech's Zorba the Greek earned 81.00 points. Japanese champion Nobunari Oda sits second with 79.20 and two-time world junior champion Adam Rippon is a surprising third with 75.82.

"This was quite an important start to the season for me; usually, my first competitions are absolute disasters.
I usually never begin the season with a Grand Prix event, I do another international first. But this is the Olympic year and since it is so long, I changed my strategy," Verner said.

Verner opened with a quad toe-triple toe combination worth 14.8 points, followed by a triple Axel and triple Lutz. He gained the highest program component score of the day and the second-highest technical tally.

"I was pleased with my jumps," he said. "I didn't like that I got a Level 1 on my combination spin and Level 1 on my sit spin, so I will have to review what happened and work on it for my free skate.
Also, I hope my choreographer Lori Nichol didn't watch today, because I can do a lot better with the steps and the emotion. It's my first big competition after a long break and I was a little nervous."

Oda, too, had a clean outing, to Franz Liszt's "Totentanz."
Although his combination, a triple Lutz, triple toe, had a lower base value than Verner's, he had a slightly higher technical score, since his spins and steps gained higher levels.

"I think I did very good," Oda said. "I worked on my expression, not just my jumps, but my five component scores were still a little low. I thought they would all be over seven points [three were under seven]. But I still did a good program."

Rippon sparkled to Neil Diamond's Jonathan Livingston Seagull, choreographed by David Wilson.
The two-time world junior champion opened with a triple flip, triple toe combination, followed by a triple Axel. He lifted an arm over his head to achieve a rare 'Tano triple Lutz, the trademark move of 1988 Olympic champion Brian Boitano.

"I think it was good, especially for my first time out testing the program in front of international judges," Rippon said. "It's too bad my closing combination spin got a Level 1, but I was so happy I rushed the first camel a little bit, and if you [don't do enough rotations] on the first position the spin drops to Level 1."

Rippon's coach, Brian Orser, said his skater proved he belonged in the big leagues.

"Last season, maybe he was a little bit like a deer in headlights," the two-time Olympic silver medalist said. "But from the first practice here he's fit in here. He's training well and he's ready."

Orser, who is widely recognized as the first skater to make the triple Axel de rigueur for top men back in the 1980s, said he spent much of the summer "tweaking" Rippon's Axel to make the three-and-a half revolution jump more consistent.

"The technique really wasn't spot on," said Orser. "Now, he's a lot more confident with it."

Home country favorite Brian Joubert had a disappointing outing, flubbing the landing of the second jump in his quad toe, triple toe combination, turning out of his triple Axel and stumbling on his triple Lutz.
The 2007 world champion sits sixth with 72.15 points, some 8.85 off the lead.

Ryan Bradley, who placed fourth at the 2009 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, earned 65.21 points for eighth place.
Skating to a techno version of the Russian folk dance "Dark Eyes," Bradley opened with a quad toe-double toe combination, followed by a solid triple Axel and a fine Level 4 camel spin.
He faltered on the landing of an easier jump for him, the triple Lutz, and his straight-line steps, although entertaining, rated only Level 1.

"I came here confident," Bradley said. "I've had a lot of good reps [run-throughs] of this short since [the Nebelhorn Trophy in] Oberstdorf last month. My programs were well received there and now I want to prove I can compete with the best in the world."
