Opining on Skate Canada: Fernandez and why he can beat Chan

Another Skate Canada is done and with that, we are a third of the way through the Grand Prix series this season. We’ve hit upon the importance of the quad this season in the men’s event. The other big revelation in the men’s competition at Skate Canada was the breakthrough of Javier Fernandez.

Fernandez makes his mark.
I don’t know what it was, really, but there was something about the way that Fernandez was skating during the practices and the warmup right before his short program that completely made me do a 180 on his chances at Skate Canada. He proved at the competition that he’s the real deal, and the switch from Nikolai Morozov to Brian Orser will likely be viewed in hindsight as the best thing he’s ever done for his career.

Obviously, this was one competition (and we should remember that his debut the season at Nebelhorn was not nearly as successful, as he finished fourth in a much less impressive field of skaters), but I don’t see him as a one-hit wonder.

And as of right now, Fernandez is the only skater who has any chance at beating a clean Patrick Chan in the free skate. Yes, potentially crazy statement, I know – but hear me out. It has nothing to do with the fact that they were only three points apart at Skate Canada, since, overall, Fernandez skated better than Chan did. But here’s why:

As they currently stand, both skaters have the same technical content in the short, so the advantage would go to Chan because his PCS will certainly be stronger than that of Fernandez. But the technical side is a different story in the free skate. Chan has two quad toes and seven triples (potentially eight) and a jumps-only base value of 63.45 (potentially 67.96 if he adds another triple toe to make eight triples). Fernandez has a quad toe, a quad salchow, and eight triples, giving him a jumps-only base value of 71.76. Both skaters can add another double toe or double loop for a three-jump combo, but those two cancel themselves out. Fernandez has the advantage because he 1) does two triple axels to Chan’s one, and 2) his quad sal is worth just a tad more than Chan’s second quad toe, and 3) he puts all three combos in the second half of his program). That’s a four-point differential, all else equal.

Fernandez is the only skater right now who has the technical content to best Chan in the free skate *and* is close enough to Chan in PCS for them to be equalized. That said, Chan’s GOEs are likely going to be higher than that of Fernandez. Plus, Chan has been talking about adding his only quad sal to his free skate. But as far as I can tell, Fernandez is the only one who could even come close to a clean Chan in the free skate. For everyone else in the world, having only one quad just means that the ladder is that much higher to climb, and no one else at this moment is getting higher PCSs than Chan is.

That said, we’ve seen that Chan hasn’t been perfect in all his jumps this season – but neither has Fernandez. But had Fernandez not fallen on his first triple axel, he would have been the Skate Canada champ (even with a doubled triple loop later in his program). And if you’re Patrick Chan, that’s probably something that doesn’t make you feel all that secure anymore.

Japan’s great hope.
They have conquered the singles disciplines, but the Japanese skaters have never been particularly good at either pairs or dance – until now. Narumi Takahashi and Mervin Tran have all the signs of a great pair. They move superbly on the ice, they skate with great chemistry, the thing they are missing is consistent technical elements. Boy, if you could just combine their feel of the ice with the technical prowess of their contemporaries, Wenjing Sui and Cong Han, then you have yourself an unbeatable super pair.

Speaking of Sui and Han, they have unfortunately not made much progress since their rookie season. Sure, they’ve got the big elements, but they are skating pretty similarly junior-ish as they were last season. Keeping that short program didn’t help, and I don’t think skating again on the Junior Grand Prix was helping them either. Yeah, it was a lot of competition time, but they were up against teams who don’t hold a candle against the ones they are up against on the senior ranks. Takahashi and Tran have lapped them in the maturity department already.

Opining on Skate Canada: Age limits suck, and … a little respect, please?

Another Skate Canada is done and with that, we are a third of the way through the Grand Prix series this season. I’ve done a lot of talking about the men’s competition, from quads to a potential threat to the dominance of Patrick Chan. But there was also a lot of intrigue in the ladies’ event. Some final thoughts below (I swear, this is it!).

Tuktamisheva – another reason the age limit sucks.
Remember a few years ago when Mao Asada was considered one of the best in the world during the Turino Olympic year? Remember that she won the Grand Prix Final over eventual Olympic bronze medalist Irina Slutskaya? And remember when she couldn’t go to either the Olympics or Worlds because she was too young? Oh, right, and remember that a then-also-too-young Yuna Kim defeated Asada at Junior Worlds?

Few would argue with the fact that Asada’s free skate at the Grand Prix Final and Kim’s free skate at Junior Worlds were both stronger than Shizuka Arakawa’s winning Olympic free skate was.

Those were two skaters, doing the most technical difficult stuff in the world, were ineligible to compete at the highest levels of competition because of an age limit. And here your have Skate Canada champ Elizaveta Tuktamisheva, who is capable of competing with the best, yet will not be able to compete at Europeans or Worlds this year because she’s too young. She looked like she has been competing with the seniors for years because, well, that’s precisely what she has been doing, except on the national level. Up until this year, she wasn’t even eligible to compete in the senior level internationally, but she has been competing at Russian Nationals since she turned 12 in 2008.

The age limit was enforced in order to keep young skaters from injuring themselves too earlier in their careers by doing quads, triple axels, and triple-triple combinations, because, as one might expect, the technical content of junior-level programs would be easier than that of senior level programs.

But like a lot of things in the world, this age limit is honorable and logical in concept, but in reality, it’s pretty much completely useless. The men’s event follows suit, simply because men’s skaters generally are stronger and more capable of doing triple axels and quads when they are in the late teens and early 20s. Even without the age limit rule, the younger guys probably wouldn’t be competitive with the older guys even if they forced themselves to be.

It’s a completely different world in the ladies’ event (and, to some extent, in the pairs’ event). Skaters like Tuktamisheva have been doing triple-triples since they were in their early teens. In fact, the level of technical content in this season’s Junior Grand Prix will most likely be more difficult than that of the Senior Grand Prix. In the JGP, you routinely see clean triple-triples landed by the top ladies in both the short and the free. So far this season, Skate America and Skate Canada have produced a total of four clean triple-triples in 40 programs.

It’s unfortunately, and frankly a bit disrespectful, that great skaters like Tuktamisheva aren’t given the chance to compete to be the best in the world when they clearly are able to because of some notion that age limits will protect skaters from overtraining and injuries. If the ISU is serious about that goal, then they need to go beyond age limits and think outside the box. And you can make the argument that younger skaters don’t have the best skating skills or that their skating hasn’t matured enough – but that’s not always the case. And if that’s the argument, then there are plenty of older skaters we should be banning from senior-level competition.

Every athlete hits his/her prime at different times in their lives, and for some, that could mean 14 or 15. Why should they miss out on a chance on competing in the Olympics (and possibly medaling in them) because they were born a year shy of some arbitrary age limit?

And speaking of respect ….

Regaining respect.
Following a season of not-so-hot skating (even her bronze at Rostelecom Cup came after a couple of big errors in the free skate), Ashley Wagner packed her bags and headed to California for a fresh start with John Nicks. And figure skating is a world full of people who don’t forget – and I’m talking about the judges. If you’ve proven yourself, they tend to remember that. If you haven’t, well, they tend to remember that too.

Wagner came into this season having finished sixth at Nationals last season. And even with a strong short program at Skate Canada, the judges ranked her eighth amongst ten in her program components score. It was them telling her that she will need to work for those points. And that she did, after a strong free skate, her PCS was miraculously second-best, almost as high as that of Akiko Suzuki. It’s a step in the right direction, and she will need to continue the consistency to get the judges to mark her program components as high as they should be.

Flatt and the college dilemma.
The same can be said about Rachael Flatt, who has been one of the top ladies from the U.S. for three seasons, earning a Worlds spot every year since 2009 and a berth to the Olympics in Vancouver. But she was also known more for her jump consistency, which began to fall off last season – first at the Grand Prix Final and then at Worlds, both of which was likely a direct result of injuries. But with that inconsistency also came a drop in her PCS. They were in the low-7s at the Olympics, the mid-6s in her Worlds free skate, the mid-6s in her Skate Canada short (where she skated cleanly), and then the high-5s in her Skate Canada free skate.

In all the years that Flatt has been on the senior circuit, I don’t believe I have ever seen her as ill-prepared for a competition as she looked during the free skate. There’ve been much talk about it already, Flatt just started college at Stanford (Go Cardinal!!) and is adjusting to college life, a new city, and new coaches. How is she going to pick up the pieces from Skate Canada? She still has one more Grand Prix this season – we will see where her skating head is at Rostelecom Cup later in the fall.

http://www.sovsport.ru/news/text-item/489605
30.10.2011

http://www.sovsport.ru/gazeta/article-item/489729
31.10.2011

http://www.sovsport.ru/news/text-item/489950
01.11.2011

http://www.sovsport.ru/news/text-item/489953

Skate Canada.

http://loopaxles.blogspot.com/2011/11/nitpick.html

The Nitpick

So, with my new job I've learned that I can't blog as much as I used too. So when I do blog I want to make sure I'm saying something meaningful. I could give a bland rundown of what took place at an event but those of you reading my blog probably already know about that so I've come up with "The Nitpick." I'll focus on one thing in particular about an event that popped to me.

So this weeks Nitpick...Chanflation.

Before I even begin...I think Patrick Chan deserved to win Skate Canada...let me just say that and get it out of the way.

So, after the short program these were the top three men...all separated by less than 2 points (1.43 to be exact). I have to tip my hat to Patrick Chan...even with a less than great skate he managed to be within two points of Javier Fernandez who had the skate of his life! Chan, if he knows how to do anything, it's how to get points. His component scores where close to 4 points up on Javier's (3.79 to be exact). As good a skater as Patrick is...his skate was not 3.79 points up on Javier (typically it might be, but not this day). Seems as though (To me at least. Figure Skating IS still subjective) Chan was propped up a bit. Even Patrick looked a little surprised at his scores when they came up. He was in the Kiss and Cry apologizing for a poor skate and then really good scores come up despite botching some of his elements. What was even more impressive is how the judges managed to squeeze Takahashi in for 2nd...that took precision!

And just a moment discussing Javier...wow! It's like he's somebody brand new! Brian Orser has worked some magic here!

To be fair, even despite the mistakes in Chan's free, it's a brilliant skate and he obviously would have won anyway...but even his free skate wasn't perfect and yet he's pulling scores like he had the skate of his life.

I don't blame Patrick for any of this...I almost don't blame the judges that much. This is the one flaw (well...I think the biggest flaw anyway) with the judging system...it's about points. Despite Chan's errors, he gets tons-o-points by doing what he does on the ice. I'm fearful of the day when, in a huge competition such as the Olympics, he's going to make similar mistakes and still beat someone that skates perfect...then I think there will be an uproar about "Chanflation."

I'm happy that Javier won the short program...he deserved to do so. I think he deserved to win by a bigger margin...or at least it seemed as though his short was better than just 1.43 points.
