http://www.examiner.com/figure-skating- ... -withdrawsJoubert bests Abbott for gold in The Hague, Amodio withdrawsIn a tuneup to the World Championships later this month, 2007 World champion Brian Joubert won his first international event since 2009, taking gold at the International Challenge Cup in The Hague. U.S. champion Jeremy Abbott again had trouble with his quad and took the silver. Earlier in the day, overnight leader Florent Amodio withdrew from the competition with an injury sustained during practice.
Joubert skated one of his best efforts in recent memory, hitting his opening quad toe superbly. And he followed it up with another six clean triples to earn a 148.49 for the free skate for a total score of 227.28. It was his first international title since the 2009 NHK Trophy.
Skating last after Joubert, Abbott’s quad toe was downgraded by the technical panel. And though he came back strong with a triple axel-double toe, the rest of his program was messy, with errors on multiple jumping passes. He was given positive grades of execution for just one of his final six jumping passes, but his program component marks kept him on the podium with a final score of 223.78.
Italy’s Samuel Contesti skated a strong free skate with five clean triples to win the bronze.
Earlier in the day, American Leah Keiser won the junior ladies’ competition with three clean triples in her free skate. The U.S. made it two golds in the junior events when Jessica Pfund and AJ Reiss won in pairs. Great Britain’s Peter Hallam held on to win the junior men’s gold by just a fraction of a point.
