Ice at World Figure Skating Champs "cracks like glass" - Smirnov
http://en.rian.ru/sports/20120328/172448635.html

The ice used for the world figure skating championships in Nice “cracks like glass,” ruining performances, former European champion Alexander Smirnov said Wednesday.
All three Russian pairs fell in Wednesday’s short program, and Smirnov and his partner Yuko Kavaguti finished 11th on 59.59 points, far behind German leaders Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy with a score of 68.63.

“I fell because my skate cracked the ice,” Smirnov said. “The ice is all new and very fresh. It just cracks under your feet like glass.”

The pair may be far off the lead, but they still have something to offer in Friday’s free skate, he said.

“We’ve got something to show, a beautiful, good number.”

Earlier Russian skater Maxim Trankov had blamed the ice for his and partner’s Tatyana Volosozhar’s fall, claiming that it crumbled and was of “weird quality.” The pair finished eighth with a score of 60.48.
The third Russian pair of Vera Bazarova and Yuri Larionov overcame a fall to finish fourth on 65.02.
Smirnov and Kavaguti won the 2010 European title in Tallinn, and have twice won bronze at the world championships.
Japanese-born Kavaguti, also known as Kawaguchi, teamed up with Smirnov to compete for Russia in 2006 after previously representing Japan and the United States.
Kavaguti became a Russian citizen and competed with Smirnov at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where they were third after the short program, but dropped to fourth after a poor free skate.

I'm still shocked with Russian pairs..
He didn't compete for three years, but as soon as I saw him, I knew that there was a true Olympic Champion on the ice. - Takahiko Kozuka, Rostelecom Cup 2009

Virtue and Moir one step closer to regaining World title with short dance win
http://www.examiner.com/figure-skating- ... -dance-win

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir put down the standard today with a strong short dance that put them in the lead at the ice dance event at the World Figure Skating Championships. Most expected rivals Meryl Davis and Charlie White, currently in second, to be their main competition, but it was home team Nathalie Pechalat and Fabian Bourzat who added a third contender for the title with a great skate to put themselves in third.

Canada’s Virtue and Moir skated a spirited short dance and were cleaner in their elements than Americans Davis and White were. The Canadians took a 1.33 lead with a 72.31 over the Americans, and while they both received the same base values for their short dance elements, it was the better-executed short dance of Virtue and Moir that won out.

Pechalat and Bourzat almost did not make it to their home World Championships after Pechalat broke her nose in training two weeks ago. But she looked strong today, showing little signs of the injury, and they are very much in contention for the gold with a 69.13, almost three points ahead of Canadian silver medalists Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje.

Americans Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani, the reigning bronze medalists, did not receive the highest levels of difficulties for their elements, which hurt them tremendously. They find themselves in seventh with a 62.35, almost seven points off the podium.

Skating much earlier than the top teams, U.S. bronze medalists Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue threw down a strong and confident short dance that earned them a 59.56. They are currently in eighth place going into the free dance in their first World Championships together.

The free dance takes place on Thursday with the top 20 teams going through to the final round.

Live play-by-play coverage: 2012 World Championships ladies' short program
http://www.examiner.com/figure-skating- ... rt-program

TRIPLE-TRIPLE COUNT: 11 attempted (Turkkila toe-toe, Glebova toe-toe, Zhang toe-toe, Silete toe-toe, Leonova toe-toe, Elene Gedevanishvili lutz-toe, Makarova toe-toe, Murakami toe-toe, Kostner toe-toe, Suzuki toe-toe, Helgesson toe-toe), 10 clean (Turkkila, Glebova, Zhang, Silete, Leonova, Gedevanishvili, Makarova, Murakami, Kostner, Suzuki)

Viktoria Helgesson SWE - triple toe-triple toe (second toe possibly underrotated), steps into triple loop (hangs on), double axel (disguised turn out) - TES 28.35, PCS 25.84, SP SCORE 54.19

Akiko Suzuki JPN - triple toe-triple toe (possibly underrotated on the second toe), steps into double lutz, double axel - unbelievable what the top skaters are doing (or not doing) today - TES 30.67, PCS 28.71, SP SCORE 59.38

Carolina Kostner ITA - triple toe-triple toe (solid), steps into double loop, double axel - TES 30.26, PCS 30.74, SP SCORE 61.00

Kanako Murakami JPN - triple toe-triple toe (delay on the first, so big), steps into triple flip, double axel - she has gone from someone who is just doing the choreography to someone who actually musically skates this program, well done - TES 34.61, PCS 28.06, SP SCORE 62.67

Alissa Czisny USA - triple lutz (fall), triple loop (fall), oh boy, double axel (step out) - TES 23.26, PCS 27.05, FALLS -2.00, SP SCORE 48.31

Valentina Marchei ITA - triple lutz (forward on the landing, no combo), steps into triple salchow-double toe, double axel - as always, a great performance quality about her - TES 27.28, PCS 24.86, SP SCORE 52.14

Final group on the ice for warmup. Skate order: Marchei, Czisny, Murakami, Kostner, Suzuki, Helgesson.

Ice cut! Tough one for Ashley Wagner. She needed to put down the triple-triple in order to stay in the favor of the international judges (respect is fleeting ...). Her current fifth-place standing is less a result of her mistake and more the result of the fact that her PCS is not as high as Asada's (which they were at Four Continents). With six more to skate, there is a good chance that she will stay in the top ten, but where is a different question.

Ashley Wagner USA - triple flip (fall out, just a bit overrotated), steps into triple loop-double toe, double axel - door it way open, question is how the PCS will turn out for Wagner - TES 28.80, PCS 27.62, SP SCORE 56.42

Sarah Hecken GER - triple toe-double toe, steps into triple salchow (landed it but caught an edge as she put her other foot down and fell), double axel - TES 24.99, PCS 22.40, FALL -1.00, SP SCORE 46.39

Ksenia Makarova RUS - triple toe-triple toe (another one!), steps into triple loop (hangs on), double axel - a great program for her, especially love the build-up at the beginning - TES 31.30, PCS 27.21, SP SCORE 58.51

Elene Gedevanishivili GEO - triple lutz-triple toe (!!!!), steps into triple salchow, single axel (what a silly mistake) - that singled axel was about three points, this won't go ahead of Leonova - TES 30.86, PCS 27.63, SP SCORE 58.49

Alena Leonova RUS - triple toe-triple toe (nice), steps into triple flip (solid), double axel - very strong progra, she looks refreshed after looking sort of burned out at Europeans - TES 34.64, PCS 29.97, SP SCORE 64.61

Mao Asada JPN - triple axel (fall, downgrade, two-foot), triple flip-double loop, steps into triple loop (two-foot slightly?) - that triple axel is bad news, wasn't fully-rotated AND a fall, leaves a whole lot of room now for the other top contenders - TES 30.89, PCS 29.60, FALL -1.00, SP SCORE 59.49

Fourth group on the ice. Podium contenders abound: Asada, Leonova, Gedevanishvili, Makarova, Hecken, Wagner. The two to watch for, of course, are Asada and Wagner, but don't forget that the two Russians are also in this group, both can make some waves with strong short programs.

Natalia Popova UKR - steps into triple flip, triple toe-double toe, double axel - TES 26.57, PCS 20.03, SP SCORE 46.60

Amelie Lacoste CAN - double axel, triple loop (turn out)-double loop (that will count as a combination, she stayed on one foot), steps into triple salchow (smart to switch it from that lutz she keeps popping) - TES 25.80, PCS 23.57, SP SCORE 49.37

Yretha Silete FRA - triple toe-triple toe (hangs on), steps into triple loop (fall out), double axel - very light jumps, a big contrast to teammate Meite - TES 27.60, PCS 20.82, SP SCORE 48.42

Victoria Muniz PUR - triple lutz (underrotated, steps out, hits the boards), steps into triple flip (underrotated? looked clean on replay)-double toe, double axel - TES 24.56, PCS 18.71, SP SCORE 43.27

Jenna McCorkell GBR - double axel (big), triple lutz (forward but hangs on)-double toe, steps into triple toe (possibly underrotated, looked clean on replay) - TES 27.56, PCS 22.86, SP SCORE 50.42

Kexin Zhang CHN - triple toe-triple toe (nice), triple lutz, nice catchfoot position on the back camel, double axel - strong skate for Zhang, she looks much more confident in her jumps than she did earlier in the season (she was still landing them then, but the entrances seemed more calculated) - TES 32.76, PCS 22.24, SP SCORE 55.00

The third group is out on the ice for warmup. Skate order: Zhang, McCorkell, Muniz, Silete, Lacoste, Popova. Silete is the home team's sole entry in the ladies' event. Lacoste had to fight for her spot multiple times. McCorkell has had a rough season, only to come back and skate one of the best free skates of her career two days ago in prelims. Interesitng storylines here.

Ice cut time! That was a nice start to the ladies' short. Turkkila was a nice surprise, and Glebova was also strong (though with a fall on her lutz). Group 3 will start getting interesting, and probably have more familiar names to those following. The one to watch in this group is Kexin Zhang, who skates first.

Kerstin Frank AUT - triple toe-double toe, triple salchow, double axel - so nonchalant about her jumps, really nice - TES 26.86, PCS 18.94, SP SCORE 45.80

Isabelle Pieman BEL - triple toe (two-foot)-double toe, steps into triple salchow, double axel (hand down, foot down, counted as a fall?) - TES 21.59, PCS 17.86, FALL -1.00, SP SCORE 38.45

Alisa Mikonsaari FIN - triple toe-double toe (big triple toe), steps into triple salchow, double axel - TES 24.90, PCS 19.26, SP SCORE 44.16

Alina Fjodorova LAT - triple flip-double toe (ekes it out), steps into triple toe (fall, took off completely wrong, not sure if she even completed the rotation), double axel (fall out), a really labored final spin that she hung onto for dear life - TES 22.11, PCS 16.95, FALL -1.00, SP SCORE 38.06

Elena Glebova EST - lots of speed, steps into triple lutz (fall), triple toe-triple toe (hangs on), double axel - TES 28.47, PCS 21.57, FALL -1.00, SP SCORE 49.04

Min-Jeong Kwak KOR - triple flip (it was a flip entrance but I think it might have been a lutz, two-footed?), triple salchow-double toe, double axel - very low score, must've had both triples underrotated or downgraded - TES 18.26, PCS 18.65, SP SCORE 36.91

Lejeanne Marais RSA - triple loop (fall, possibly underrotated), double axel, double salchow (step out) - TES 16.96, PCS 16.26, FALL -1.00, SP SCORE 32.22

Romy Bühler SUI - triple toe-double toe, steps into double salchow, double axel - nice performance quality about her skating, the music really works for her - TES 23.78, PCS 20.24, SP SCORE 44.02

Sonia Lafuente ESP - steps into triple flip, triple loop-double toe, double axel - better with her presence than I've seen, but she really needs to look up a lot more for greater connection - TES 26.98, PCS 20.38, SP SCORE 47.36

Polina Korobeynikova RUS - triple flip (turn out, no combo), steps into triple loop, double axel, could've been better, could've been worse - that lack of combo is going to be costly - TES 25.36, PCS 21.35, SP SCORE 46.71

Juulia Turkkila FIN - triple toe-triple toe (first of the day!), steps into triple salchow (hangs on), double axel (hangs on) - TES 28.18, PCS 19.57, SP SCORE 47.75

Clara Peters IRL - about to fall out of her opening pose (nerves a bit?), double lutz-double loop, double axel, steps into double flip, clean but no triples - TES 17.43, PCS 16.60, SP SCORE 34.03

First group warming up! Skate order: Peters, Turkkila, Korobeynikova, Lafuente, Buhler, Marais. The one to keep an eye out for here is Korobeynikova - 4th at Europeans, can unleash all sorts of jumps, but very inconsistent (and it's only her second senior international event ever ... the first was Europeans).

Алена Леонова и Ксения Макарова выступили в короткой программе на чемпионате мира по фигурному катанию выше всяких похвал
http://fsnews.ru/index-m-single-id-1549.html
