Takahashi holds off Kozuka for fifth Japanese title

It wasn’t pretty, but 2010 World champion Daisuke Takahashi survived three falls in his free skate and won his fifth Japanese title, holding off a surge by Takahiko Kozuka thanks to his massive lead from the short program. The men’s medalists were crowned today at the Japan Figure Skating Championships, just after an upset in the ladies’ short program, where Kanako Murakami took the surprise lead.

With a lead of over ten points from a flawless short program, Takahashi had a huge edge going into the free skate. But it was a completely different story in the free skate, where he opened with a fall on his quad toe. He hit six clean triples after the opening fall but took two more spills, one on his second triple axel and the other on his final jump, a triple flip. His program component mark saved him from dropping from the top, and he took the gold with a final score of 254.60.

Skating immediately before Takahashi, Kozuka put down a solid, though still flawed, free skate. After hitting his opening quad toe, which he has struggled with all season, he landed seven more triples. A fall on his second triple axel prevented him from making up the deficit to Takahashi and repeating as champion. He finished with a 250.97, less than four points from the top.

It was youngster Yuzuru Hanyu, however, who seized the opportunity and won the free skate with a strong free skate that included a quad toe and seven clean triples. His only mistake was a singled final triple salchow, but he was technically the best of the top three men. But he trailed Kozuka by over ten points and Takahashi by over 20 points from the short program, and the deficit was too large to overcome. Still, he moved up from fourth to take home his first medal at his national championships after winning the junior title two years ago.

MEN (top ten final standings)
1. Daisuke Takahashi – 254.60
2. Takahiko Kozuka – 250.97
3. Yuzuru Hanyu – 241.91
4. Tatsuki Machida – 213.48
5. Takahito Mura – 204.21
6. Daisuke Murakami – 203.41
7. Keiji Tankaa – 201.45
8. Kento Nakamura – 195.94
9. Shoma Uno – 190.42
10. Ryuju Hino – 188.30

Could visit the gala in Osaka and see the event live in the arena. Namihaya is located in the middle of nowhere, also it was terrible cold inside. But the event was maginificent. Ladies field is quite strong, event juniors landed a bunch of good jumps and other elements. They all try to follow Shizuka's style and that's probably the negative point- lack of originality. Except Mao. I saw her first time live, not on TV, this season. She is way more beautiful than anyone else: smooth, sincere, refine, just fairy and gorgeous. Evene Shizuka looks almost wooden next to Mao. In men's Mura was the only one who performed a quad in a show (later Kozuka succeeded, but in a finale, not in a program). He skates very mature and his 3A is huge. He reminded me Honda's style and Yag's somewhere. Hanyu's skates seem like have no toes, only blades. He never stops actually smoothing the ice. Dai was sensual as always, and was just DAI! Chan was in a not-ironed T-shirt with the program of Start on Ice brand- a couple of jumps at the beginning (almost fell on 2A, but could save it), then just skating for the audience and the final spin. Evene Stef's program had more elements. He was beautiful in his Rigoletto, in spite of being a little hairy, with his amazing spins, blades, shining face and total love from the fans. The show ended up with a finale and a firework. :plush46:

Russian duel set to light up Ladies' Figure Skating competition

INNSBRUCK, Jan 12 - One has blonde hair, the other has dark hair. One clinched Gold at the Junior World Championships in 2011, the other claimed Silver, and it was the same placement at the 2011 Russian Junior Championships and 2010-2011 Junior Grand Prix Finals.

Both have already made the step up to international level by placing in the top three in their nation's senior national championships.

It is little wonder then that the duel between 15-year-old Russian Figure Skating prodigies Adelina SOTNIKOVA and Elizaveta TUKTAMISHEVA is expected to dominate the ice when the Innsbruck 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games Ladies' Competition begins on January 15 at Olympiaworld.

Blonde-haired SOTNIKOVA is the Skater who has consistently come out on top in the duo's amazing duel, and has confirmed her place as one of the sport's most exciting prospects by winning the Russian national championships on three occasions, with her first title coming at the age of 12.

Dark-haired TUKTAMISHEVA may have been forced to accept second-best on many occasions, but she is also a rising star in the sport. And as she prepares for her next battle with her compatriot, she insists their rivalry has helped elevate both to great heights.

"If there was no such rivalry, we would not get to where we both are now," TUKTAMISHEVA, who won the 2010-2011 Russian Junior Championships, said.

TUKTAMISHEVA has secured a second-place and two third-place finishes in the Russian nationals and is intent on concentrating on her own performance in Innsbruck.

"I don't like making guesses," she said. "The strongest will win. I will simply try to do everything I can. [To beat SOTNIKOVA] I just need to skate my programme well and to show everything I can do."

Nevertheless, TUKTAMISHEVA will not perform the Triple Axel she has been attempting in training. "We are not including it in the programme," she said. "We do not want to take risks so far."

TUKTAMISHEVA's coach, Svetlana VERETENNIKOVA (RUS), believes her athlete is destined for greatness.

"When she places second to Adelina, I tell her she is an equal athlete," she said. "She is no worse than her, she is equal in terms of strengths. She has all the qualities needed, so [if she comes second] that may be because her time as not come yet."

SOTNIKOVA knows her compatriot's strengths but refuses to focus solely on her. "Of course Liza [TUKTAMISHEVA] is my rival. We are the two Russian girls and we are both strong," she said. "However, Liza is not the only one that is strong, the Japanese and Chinese skaters are strong."

"Everyone can do all the technical elements here. The most important thing is to overcome myself. Because you have to struggle with nerves."

"I have to show all I can do. I have a perfect feeling about these Games."

SOTNIKOVA'S coach, Elena VODOREZOVA (RUS), was keen to emphasise the girls' rivalry starts and ends on the ice.

"In our normal life the girls, as well as us coaches, communicate very friendly," she said. "Adelina and Elizaveta even share the apartment here."

"In sport we are individuals, in the competition we are rivals, and we have always been clear about it. But in life we are totally normal."

Chinese skater LI Zijun, 15, was senior champion in her country in 2011, but placed third in the junior Grand Prix after the Russians. She is aiming for a medal at these Games, but admits she may have to settle for Bronze.

"I don't think I am at their [the Russian girls'] level, they are better than me," she said.
