... Brian Joubert is not staying in the athlete's village -- he is in a house about 15 minutes from the Pacific Coliseum (where the skating events are): "I made this choice because I didn't feel so well in the village in my first two Olympic Games."...

Rings and rinks: Quads, tweets and humidity
Behind the scenes at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver

Johnny Weir hasn't tried any quads in competition this year, but he's thinking about putting one in his free skate in Vancouver.

"The day before yesterday, I did a long program run-through at Trout Lake [practice rink], and Galina said, 'let's just try it and see how your legs are,' and boom a clean quad," he said.

"I took yesterday off, so my legs were too heavy get around one this morning, but I'm going to try it again tonight. What do I have to lose? I'm not one of the favorites for a medal."

We've known Johnny for years, but we never knew he was such a World War II buff. He's passing time here not by watching himself on Sundance's Be Good, Johnny Weir, but with a documentary on Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin.

"It's all about the behind-the-scenes deals; it's so interesting. They're all fighting against Hitler, and I think that's kind of applicable to the situation here. Everyone is at war."

So which one of the three does Weir most identify with?
As we crossed our fingers that he wouldn't say Stalin, he answered, "Oh, I'm Lady Gaga."

Evan Lysacek was the only top man to do a full-out run-through of his short this morning, simulating competition conditions. He skated clean and left the ice in high spirits.

"I'm so happy skating here. I'm having fun, I'm well prepared, the elements feel secure, everything feels good. My [left] foot it better today; it's dry outside. It gets sore when it's humid. It feels good."...

Lysacek believes in his chances for the podium, even if his foot doesn't permit him to train the quad.

"It's all about that night; like any sport, you can try to predict what will happen, but you don' know. It depends who's on fire. I think that's what is going to happen here. You prepare as best you can, and then you leave it in the hands of fate."...

Interesting morsels

Patrick Chan says he's never felt better. "I'm not even thinking about any injury. The triple Axel is great, just another jump."

Lysacek's foot may feel better, but his neck is a bit sore. "I have a lot of head snaps in my program."

Not much interference at any of the men's practices. The closest thing to a collision came when Michal Brezina came too close to one of the big leg kicks in Lysacek's straight-line steps.

Tomas Verner said his poor showings at Skate America and Europeans were due to flu: "I was very sick, lost many pounds, I was weak, had no power. I couldn't get through the steps [in his Zorba short] fast, and they look crappy when they're not fast. Now I'm much stronger than before."

Jeremy Abbott continues to enjoy skating in the media-cast shadows of Lysacek and Weir. "They have high-profile personalities. In figure skating, I'm more the quiet type. I'm doing my own thing. I like that no one is talking to me; there's not as much pressure or expectations."

Daisuke Takahashi is happy with his form. "The quad is getting there and I'm putting it in my long."

Reality star Johnny Weir now must compete

... The question is whether he can put up enough points to stay with the leaders. In that vein, he said he is toying with using a quadruple jump in his long program for the first time in two years.

"What do I have to lose?" he said. "I'm not a favorite for a medal here. If I feel like doing it, I will do it."

Weir barely will make it into prime time during tonight's short program, performed to "I Love You, I Hate You" by Argentine pianist Raul di Blasio. He will be the 25th of 30 skaters, taking the ice shortly before 8 p.m. PST in a draw that is heavily weighted toward the back end.

Plushenko (skating to "Concierto de Aranjuez" by Joaquin Rodrigo) skates 10th and Lambiel (Rossini's "William Tell") 19th, but many of the other more high-profile names are in the last 10 - Joubert ("Rise" by Safri Duo) at 21st, Canadian Patrick Chan ("Tango de los Exilados" by Walter Taieb) at 24th, Lysacek (Stravinsky's "Firebird") at 28th and Abbott ("A Day in the Life" by John Lennon and Paul McCartney) at 29th.

Lysacek, who had a stress fracture in his left foot when he won at worlds and said he had pain in the foot after nationals, said this week he is not likely to try a quad.

Plushenko, who returned to competition this year after a three-year absence, is trying to become the first man since Dick Button to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals.

Lambiel says he will attempt two quads in his long program and a quad-triple-triple in the short.

15 февраля в олимпийском турнире по фигурному катанию в Ванкувере российская пара Юко Кавагути и Александр Смирнов заняла четвертое место, упустив из-за ряда ошибок в произвольной программе бронзовую медаль. Выступление Кавагути и Смирнова специальному корреспонденту Агентства спортивной информации "Весь спорт" прокомментировала их тренер, легендарная Тамара Москвина.

- Я очень сожалею, - эмоции Тамары Москвиной были понятны без слов. - Мне очень, очень жаль, что все получилось так, как получилось. Сегодня у нас реально могла бы быть медаль.

- Почему вы в последний момент перед стартом решили отказаться от четверного выброса?
- Вообще-то, мы и не планировали его делать. В таких серьезных соревнованиях ставить первым элементом самый сложный - слишком большой риск. Потом могла последовать просто лавина ошибок. Правда, хотя сейчас мы четверной и не делали, все равно получилось не все...

- По горячим следам, как вам кажется, почему ребята не справились? Перегорели психологически?
- Сейчас очень сложно об этом говорить.. Значит, на данном этапе, они просто не были в том состоянии, чтобы сделать все запланированные элементы.

- Что вы так долго говорили Юко у борта перед стартом?
- Я сказала ей: "Покажи себя! Покажи свою красоту, покажи все то, что скрыто в твоей душе, в твоем сердце. Раскрой все свои чувства, все эмоции!"

- А как успокаивали ее после выступления?
- Я ее и не успокаивала. Чем тут можно успокоить?..

- Александр Смирнов сказал, что хочет остаться в спорте до домашней Олимпиады в Сочи и там взять реванш. Это реально?
- Конечно. В принципе, это возможно. Но сейчас, сразу после окончания соревнований, трудно строить какие-то планы... Сначала нужно отойти от этого поражения. А я считаю, наше сегодняшнее четвертое место - это поражение.

- Победу суперопытных китайцев Ксю Шень и хонбо Чжао вы считаете заслуженной?
- Да, для этих ребят Олимпиада в Ванкувере стала уже четвертой в карьере. Они очень долго ждали, долго шли к олимпийскому золоту.

- Впереди у вас еще чемпионат мира в Турине. Реально будет настроить ребят там показать свое лучшее катание?
- До чемпионата мира еще нужно дожить. Обычно после таких неудачных выступлений сильно портится настроение, и нужно время, чтобы отойти. Я 17 февраля улетаю в Москву, а ребята, скорее всего, останутся на показательные выступления. Потом вернутся, и снова начнется работа.

Четвертое место на Олимпийских играх в Ванкувере российской пары Юко Кавагути / Александр Смирнов, которое их тренер Тамара Москвина назвала поражением, Юко Кавагути приняла по-русски эмоционально, а не по-японски невозмутимо. В смешанной зоне она искренне пыталась объяснить незнакомым людям, насколько это тяжело - проиграть олимпийскую медаль. Эмоции Юко Кавагути передает специальный корреспондент Агентства спортивной информации "Весь спорт".

"Я настраивалась исполнять четверной выброс, - сказала Юко Кавагути. - Но
в последний момент перед стартом, уже после разминки, мне сказали, что будем делать тройной. Наверное, я немного погорячилась, переволновалась. Перед стартом Тамара Николаевна Москвина мне сказала: "Катайся красиво!" Мы хотели показать свое лучшее выступление, но наверное, давление Олимпиады оказалось слишком большим. Я очень сильно нервничала еще вчера во время короткой программы, так что сегодня хотела действительно кататься красиво, в удовольствие. Это не получилось. Что будет дальше, останемся ли мы до Сочи - я не знаю..."
